Meet Kai Marion

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kai Marion.

Hi Kai, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I remember as a little boy, I’ve always wanted to entertain people. Rather it be making people laugh, dancing or singing…I just had an enjoyment of making people feel good. I remember writing songs as a little boy and putting on shows for my mom and dad in hopes that they would see the love that I have for performing. As I grew older, I fell in love with music and studied the greats. I would mimic their movements and copy their styles. I loved to sing and rap and started to incorporate both in my art. I grew up writing poetry and finally started to take my career seriously once I graduated high school. I knew I needed and wanted education behind me to back my music. I craved to know and gain the knowledge so no one can take control over my art or music.

Growing up, it wasn’t a lot of representation with artists being in school and going after degrees. I wanted to break that barrier. So I went to college and started doing music at the same time. I have been managing full-time jobs and going to school while being a part of school organizations that helped mold me into the Artist I am today. I’ve had plenty of performance opportunities and gained a lot of connections within the industry. I’ve dropped music independently and now, with the new student ran distribution hub at Georgia State University called MTM Standard. I am now in the process of getting ready to Graduate with a major in Music Management & also prepping for an EP to drop later this year.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth road….HA!!! I don’t even know what that is. It’s definitely been a struggle. From late nights and early mornings, it was a lot trying to maintain my mental health. I started to struggle with anxiety. I sacrificed a lot to be here. I worked several jobs while trying to maintain bills and my sanity. Doing school while working full-time jobs is definitely not for the weak. It’s times I would ask myself why am I putting myself through this not knowing that I had a bigger purpose. I started to become sleep-deprived due to lack of rest. At times I didn’t think I could make it but I kept going.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an independent artist based in Atlanta, Georgia. I have a variation of sounds but I would say I specialize in Hip-Hop and R&B. I am most known for my chants and my emotions in my performances. I would say I am most proud of my drive. I worked vigorously to gain my voice and perfect my sound. It was times I was told I had to pick singing or rap and I decided to do both. I love how I never let anyone put me in a box. The sky is the limit and I’m flying high!

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Going to my grandma’s house, bothering her and watching her bake cakes. She would always get me Chinese food or Jamaican beef Pattie’s. She always used to give me the empty bowls with the cake mix residue from it.
