Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaila Griffin.
Kaila, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been drawn towards makeup. When I was younger I would always play in my mom’s makeup. When YouTube came along I would watch videos on how to do makeup all day, and essentially that’s how I taught myself. While in high school, I was on the dance team and used to do many of my teammate’s eyebrows and makeup. Although I was interested in makeup, I never gave much thought to it as a career. I knew that I wanted to work in the beauty industry but I wanted to be on the corporate side of the industry. After I graduated high school I went on to attend Tuskegee University where I obtained my Bachelors in Communications. My time at Tuskegee really helped shape me into the business woman I am today. While in college, I still did makeup on the side but my goal after graduation was to work in PR for a major beauty company. Upon graduating I received a position in PR and Marketing for a beauty company but, I felt like something was missing and ultimately decided to leave that position and start my entrepreneurial endeavors. Although I was nervous about taking this step,the beauty industry began to expand I realized that I could do much more than just makeup application and started looking into more permanent and semi-permanent makeup. After doing much research, I knew that was something that I wanted to do. I signed up for a class, enrolled in Esthetician school and the rest is now Flossy Falsies.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a business is definitely not a smooth road, but the rewards are worth it. The biggest challenge in the beginning was actually getting started. I struggled with the fear of actually putting myself out there, because what if no one was interested in my services? It was easier to stay in my own box because that’s where I was most comfortable. Often times we tend to get in our own way just simply out of fear, and that’s exactly what I was doing. Once I moved past that fear of getting started my clients began to come and I’ve built a pretty consistent return clientele. I believe if pursuing our passion was easy that everyone would do it, but it’s not it comes with its highs and lows.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Flossy Falsies story. Tell us more about the business.
Flossy Falsies is a beauty company that specializes in semi-permanent makeup application. Flossy Falsies is most notable for eyelash extensions but has since expanded into the micro-shading realm of the beauty industry. As a company, I am most proud of the impact that I have on my clients. Every client is different and has individual needs, I love the reactions that I get from my clients after their services and I’m proud that I could be apart of helping them achieve that. Flossy Falsies is different from others because health and beauty is at the forefront of my business. Although we want to help enhance the beauty that lies within every client, we also want to make sure that we are achieving these results in the healthiest and safest way.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not sure if good luck or bad luck has played a part of life, rather blessings and lessons. I believe everything good that has happened to me was meant exactly for me and that I would consider that to be a blessing. I also believe that anything that could be considered “bad luck” has been a lesson and changed my course of direction for the better. I know that starting and operating a business is far from easy and that I will be in for a lot more lessons but I’m sure the good will outweigh the bad.
