Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Eaker.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My introduction to photography was really through the theater. I grew up loving to perform and wanted to be a part of every show, even when I didn’t get a part. I decided one way I could be involved was to take pictures to use as promos for the shows. I had no idea how much I would love photography and how much creative freedom I would find behind the lens. From then on I have experimented with different forms and techniques throughout my education. I continued to combine my love of photography, film and performance throughout high school and college with various projects culminating in a thesis focusing on the impact of adapting theater to film. Later in grad school, my photography took a more journalistic tone. I believe my journey through various inspirations and creative experiments has really shaped my style of photography today. Now my photography isn’t just a hobby, it’s my business. My style is raw, authentic and honest with a touch of whimsy. I like to think it reflects my personality as well.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think starting a business is ever a smooth road. Growing up, I never really thought of myself as an entrepreneur. However, stories of my younger self hawking homemade crafts and Knick knacks to neighbors and friends should have tipped me off. Some of the struggles have been mostly ordinary ones that I am sure everyone goes through. I have had to learn all about financial planning, organizational systems, strategic marketing and more. I had learned some of these techniques from other jobs, however it’s all different when you’re on your own. I have had to turn to YouTube University more than once. Another struggle I have dealt with is what I like to call “imposter syndrome”. It’s that feeling you get when you see how talented and successful everyone else is and you feel like a fraud. However, every time I have a happy client or when I see that I have made someone feel beautiful in their photos for the first time, I remember that those struggles are all worth it.
Katie B. Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am primarily a lifestyle and wedding photographer. In the past I have focused on families, couples and headshots. Those have been really fun and I have loved every minute of getting to work with my amazing clients. However, in 2018 I am really working on growing my wedding business. What sets me apart as a wedding photographer is that I am not just providing a service, I’m providing an experience. That means that I am not just there to take your photos and leave. I’m there to play with your kids to help make them smile, I’ll help sew a button back on your dress, I’ll make sure the bride eats and make sure to send special prints to all the parents after the wedding (it’s a big day for them too!) If you hire me, I want you to feel like you have your best friend there taking your photos. There is plenty to stress about on your wedding day, I will make sure that the photography is not one of them.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far has been making the choice to start my business. For so long I thought that photography was something that was fun, creative and fulfilling but it couldn’t support me. Now, I have the confidence and ability to put myself out there and I am so lucky that Atlanta fosters such a great creative community that I can turn to for help and inspiration.
