Meet Kaylyn Powell of Kay’s Beautique in McDonough

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylyn Powell.

Kaylyn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After graduating high school in 2014, I had my mind set on going to California to pursue my long-time dream of acting and modeling. After much thought and consideration, I decide to attend beauty school as a plan b so that once I arrived in California, I would be able to have a way to generate income while following my passion.

I had always been interested in the beauty industry and the creativity that came with being a cosmetologist. August of 2014, I decided to attend Empire Beauty School in Morrow, GA to obtain my Masters in Cosmetology. The process only took 11 months, but I gained a lifetime worth of knowledge. After graduating beauty school in Aug of 2015, I immediately started working in the film and entertainment industry here in Atlanta. I worked with one of the most notable casting agents in Atlanta who casted me for many different projects in front of the camera and behind the scenes. I also started doing movies, tv shows, and other independent projects until the workload slowed down. I began working a normal 9- 5 job losing sight of who I was and my dreams.

After plenty of dead-end jobs, trials, and tribulations I found myself homeless, pregnant and broke. I sat in my best friend’s house with tears in my eyes and decided I had no choice, but to create a future for my family and finish the business that I had already started. Within the first week of opening my online business, I profited $300. My boyfriend, Tyrell Peoples was a truck driver, so when he came back to town I had no other option, but to go on the road to live with him. We stayed on the back of his tractor-trailer for awhile with no set plan. January 2017 he stepped out on faith and used the money intended for our apartment to open Kay’s Beautique the Salon Suite.

Though this meant we would be homeless a little while longer, I knew that it was the right investment for our future. March of 2018 at seven months pregnant we finally were able to move into an apartment and within two months I gave birth to my beautiful baby girl. After a successful run, in September 2018 I decided to close down Kay’s Beautique the Salon and began helping other young women start their business as well as still operating Kay’s Beautique Online.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it was definitely not a smooth road. I was so sick while pregnant that I couldn’t keep a normal job. There were times when I thought there was no way out and my back was against the wall. There were days when I lost more money than I gained and cried more times than I prayed. My life took a downward spiral quickly.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
