Today we’d like to introduce you to Keron Spencer.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in El Paso, Texas. The Middle son of three boys. My mother raised us in Atlanta, GA. She did her best to teach us right from wrong and how to treat people. The one thing that she couldn’t teach us was how to mature into a man. Through mistakes I’ve have made as a young adult, I learned to take my mistakes and grow from them. At the age of 16, I was diagnosed with a rare sleep disorder called “narcolepsy”. They call it a disorderly, but experience shows me that it is more of a gift to be able to experience the nonphysical world as much as the physical one I’m currently living in. But enough about me for right now.
I have a younger brother. He is now 29. Before moving to the east side of town. We lived in College Park, GA. At the age of seven, he was struck by a car as he tried to cross an intersection. I literally seen little brother get blasted by a car going at least 35-40 mph. That experience was one of many experiences that changed my outlook on life as a young boy. My brother spent a month in a coma, and with slight brain damage and a broken leg. He was back home.
Fast forward to the age of 27. He was living in Middletown, Ohio. He was driving home from work one day and somehow got into a serious accident. I say somehow because the other driver kept going, and he doesn’t remember the accident. He was airlifted to the emergency room. There he spent a month in a coma again. He now suffers from a traumatic brain injury. He hasn’t been the same since the accident. He now has seizures, dementia, and his left arm and side is partially paralyzed. My mother struggles and stresses herself sick because she can’t get the help that she needs from the government to provide him the proper guidance to rehabilitating. He has no friends. He always talks about dying. He stays depressed as well. He has a great spirit when he’s around other people and that’s all he needs. In June 2017, my father passed away from brain cancer. My brother keeps forgetting that my father passed, so it kinda hurts to tell him every time.
In the midst of my father slowly withering away from cancer. I had an epiphany. Before my dad was hospitalized we had a deep conversation about what I was doing in life and the road I needed to head down. He told me that he didn’t understand why I kept stressing about jobs with other people. He said that I had multiple skills that people will pay good money for. He told me to find what I do best and create your own job. At the time, I didn’t realize how much those words would impact me in the near future.
After my father passed, I quit my job driving forklifts and decided to start my own interior painting business. It was scary and people warned me of the risk. Some people even tried to tell me I was dumb and I need to find another job. No matter what anyone says, I’m focused because I have goals to achieve. My business started off smooth and now I am able to pay bills and enjoy the comfort of moving on my own time. I also get plenty rest now lol.
I started doing artwork a little less then a year ago. I now use art as a way to release stress and pain. I have more to tell but I will save that for the interview. Check out my business page and artwork @keronkanpainting @sleepoxy_artist on Instagram.
Has it been a smooth road?
This journey has. Its been easy by far. When I think of my future and legacy. I believe that my hard work is more of a chess move. The support of my fellow brothers and sisters is enough fuel to keep my engine running for years to come. One thing that I learned from successful entrepreneurs is to stay consistent and never doubt your ideas when others do.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
