Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Davis.
Kim, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my journey with the Sexual Assault Center of NWGA in 2004 as the victim advocate. I had spent seven years of my career working for the Department of Juvenile Justice as a probation officer. My first child was born in April of 2004 and I knew that I needed a change in careers. In September of 2004, I found that change at the SAC NWGA. I loved every aspect of my job and the ability to help others. Being a non profit is hard though. In 2007, we faced budget cuts. Luckily, I had an opportunity fall in my lap, so I chose to leave the SAC NWGA so that no one would have to be cut. During the two years that I was gone, the SAC NWGA went through two directors and and two advocates. In 2009, the SAC NWGA was facing it’s next change as both the Executive Director and the Victim Advocate resigned within weeks of each other. When I saw this, I called the Board President and told her I was interested. I interviewed and was hired on as the Executive Director in November of 09 and have been here ever since. This is where I am suppose to be.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Working in the non-profit business always comes with struggles. Mostly financial ones because you aren’t guaranteed funding. Fundraising is difficult in a small town where there are a lot of non-profits. We have made it work.
