Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Henderson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kim. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
If you have lived for any length of time, you know that life can deal you some difficult hands that you have to learn how to play. For me, as a child growing up life was not the easiest but thanks to my mother, she made it one of the happiest times of my life. I would say at the age of 13, I found my purpose when my mother became hospitalized as a result of complications due to uncontrolled bleeding. It was during this time and many times before–through her example, I learned the power of someone’s strength, will, resilience, and determination to live and overcome despite what life throws their way. I knew that helping families and women to recognize their resilience and strength was going to be apart of my life’s purpose. With this knowledge, I dedicated my studies to further this purpose.
I attended the University of Connecticut where I earned a Bachelors degree in Psychology and later earned my Masters in Social Work from New York University (NYU). It was at NYU, I honed in on my passion for also working with individuals in the area of grief, loss, and bereavement. I was selected to be fellow in the nationally recognized Zelda Foster Studies in Palliative and End-of-Life-Care Leadership program. Currently, I work at NYU Hospital as a Licensed Master’s (Medical) Social Worker, where I provide psychotherapy, discharge planning assistance, and advocacy for patients and families.
In addition to this, for over ten years I served as a youth leader at my church Dabar Bethlehem Cathedral. There I provide mentorship, guidance, counseling (individual & group), crisis intervention, advocacy, and teaching for youth ages 13-20. My passion to empower, provide comfort, support, and encouragement to other’s with the goal of helping them to succeed in life, in addition to my passion to help women understand their value and worth outside of their life experiences, led me to start Woman Unbreakable in 2018.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has certainly not been an easy road. A moment of transparency, one of the hardest challenges I had to overcome was the challenge of getting out of my own way. Starting Woman Unbreakable, I struggled with feelings of anxiety and self-doubt related to my thoughts of inadequacy and fear of rejection. However, I was honest with myself that there was no way I could start this organization and still operate in that mindset — which is a mindset of “brokenness”. I was determined to “become the change I wanted to see”- Mahatma Gandhi. To make this happen, I had to become comfortable doing a lot of introspection, praying, and stepping out in faith despite my own apprehensions and fears. Though this journey has been challenging, it has allowed me to grow in ways I never imagined. I now strongly believe that in order for anyone to grow they will have to be willing to face challenges, overcome obstacles, embrace moments of discomfort, remain consistent and have patience!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Woman Unbreakable – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I will start off by saying, it is no secret that both our internal and external experiences help shape and mold us into who we are. Woman Unbreakable (WU) is an organization and movement geared towards challenging society’s narrative of the “broken woman.” We believe women gain strength in recognizing their resilience. WU aims to provide women with the resources, tools, mentorship, sisterhood, and the support they will need to successfully navigate through life experiences and emerge from them unbroken. Through a holistic lens, WU believes in encouraging self-awareness, growth and healing of multi-cultural women across the globe, empowering them to become their best selves.
Who is a Woman Unbreakable? A Woman Unbreakable is a woman who is strong, courageous, bold, powerful, unwavering, resilient, determined, smart, loving, caring, beautiful, sexy, and determined to live life to the fullest. Our mission is to empower, equip, and encourage women to value themselves and their experiences. Helping them to understand no matter what negativity or obstacles life brings, they can overcome it “UNBROKEN.”
So what sets us apart from others?! Well, we genuinely believe in collaboration over competition (we are stronger together than apart), the power of sisterhood, and shared experiences. Though we are a women’s empowerment organization, we believe in working with and highlighting other women’s empowerment organizations, with the goal of making a greater impact. Woman Unbreakable WILL NOT reach every woman, so it is important for us to serve as a vessel to get the word out there about other organizations on the same mission to bring about change, and encourage women to believe in themselves, value themselves, and step into their greatness. In addition to this, we believe in genuine connections. As the founder, I ensure that I personally engage with those engaging with us on our social media platforms, celebrate with those who are celebrating, pray with those who need prayer, and encourage those who need encouragement.
Which brings me to the point of what I am proudest of; I am proudest of the impact Woman Unbreakable has made in such a short space of time. Every time I receive a message about how Woman Unbreakable is changing the lives of women and encouraging them to healing and grow, I AM PROUD! Woman Unbreakable is not only a sisterhood–it is a MOVEMENT. There is a shift happening globally where women are taking back their power. It is time for organizations such as WU to help women focus on their strengths, and recognize how valuable and worthy they are regardless of their life circumstances.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
There are so many great things on the horizon for Woman Unbreakable. I am looking forward to launching our scholarship fund and mentoring program in 2020. I am also looking forward to celebrating WU’s one-year anniversary in October 2019.
In the future, my hope is for Woman Unbreakable to be known for its positive impact on woman globally and for it to become an internationally recognized organization. I am also looking forward to opportunities that will allow me–through speaking engagements, to encourage, impact, motivate and inspire other women to get out of their own way, and shift their mindset which will allow them to step into their GREATNESS!
