Today we’d like to introduce you to Kisha Lesane.
Kisha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey as a traveling food blogger did not begin until 2019 but my heart for the food industry started long before then. As I was growing up in a small but quaint town in North Carolina, my dad owned/ran a restaurant and every day watching him behind the scenes and the joy I saw upon his face when he prepared a meal was when a passion for food was born. I didn’t realize I could turn my passion into my everyday life until many many years later, when I became homeless due to bad decisions, as well as not knowing how to handle my finances.
During this period, I also lost everything that was dear to me. Now do not allow this bit of information to scare you because, trust me the story gets better. While I was homeless and feeling pure despair, I still worked a 9-5 and had no choice but to learn how to smile through the pain and get up everyday and find a way to survive while not showing the world. Well, while surviving, I had to eat right? So I would research and follow the crowds to try to find all the local places that served amazing food but had even better prices because, let’s be honest, I was truly on a budget and each time I walked into a restaurant it reminded me of the energy and warm feel my dad put into making his restaurant successful. None of the restaurants knew how sliding my paid-for meal towards me gave me hope and energy to make it one more day.
Now during my 6-8 months of surviving, I begin to think differently and I promised myself that even when I was able to regain traction and climb my way out of my rough place I would use my time, energy and effort to be the voice of all the mom and pop restaurants out there because I see their passion in every meal they prepare. I see the long hours they have to sacrifice, I know how they have a family at home who miss them and if I can help the world see how supporting small business can make a difference in everyone’s life then maybe that journey of my life has purpose. That is how three years after getting back on my feet I started A Pinch Of Butter. I now use my platform to eat and try amazing food and products while sharing the experience with all who enjoy food as much as I do.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has truly not been a smooth ride. Three years ago, I was homeless and yes, I may have an amazing home, an even better job, running a business doing what I love and, of course, creating magic now. I still have long nights, early mornings and some days I only get to take a nap before heading into my 9-5 but it is always worth it when I get to share the story of Mom and Pop restaurants.
Another struggle I would have to say I face on a day to day would be learning to ask for help. I have made so many mistakes in this road to entrepreneurship and if in the beginning of this journey, I would have just asked for help, I could have avoided a few.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the A Pinch Of Butter story. Tell us more about your work.
A Pinch Of Butter is more than just a food blog. It is full of restaurant reviews, recipes, good fun and laughs as well as tips on how I overcome anxiety on a day today. I have always been taught that food solves most issues so I feel if I can get everyone back in love with food and their kitchens while creating memories with the ones they love, than A Pinch Of Butter has served its purpose.
I would say I specialize in being human. Let me explain my pictures are not picture perfect. I create meals that anyone can recreate. I visit restaurants that everyday people would love to visit. I try my hardest not to make anyone feel they can not visit my website and create magic in their own kitchen.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next five years, I hope to officially be the voice of the small business restaurant owners. I know I will have the platform needed to bring focus to the passion of food.
