Today we’d like to introduce you to KT.
Thanks for sharing your story with us KT. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in a musical household. Pops on keys at church. Mama, sister, and brother all in band throughout school. I played classical piano from age 6-12 until wanting to create my own stuff. I started hearing more and more hip hop and so I started recording the radio to cassette and burning CDs of my favorite instrumentals.
Once I started creating on my Pops keyboard, all the Mozart and Bach blended with the gospel, rock, and jazz my pops listened to. That inspired a lot of my early beat-making. He’s a big fan of Earth, Wind and Fire and Herbie Hancock, but I didn’t even comprehend their impact fully until I got older.
I was inspired by Timbaland, the Neptunes, Dr. Dre, Kanye and many more. Their music was just so universally good and transcended genre.
I played beats and wrote raps with friends up until I got to college when I got my first laptop. Then, experimenting with friends turned into my first experiences with “producing” artists. Guiding the song and getting the best out of rappers and singers. All from my dorm room, of course.
That was back in ‘09. These days, I’m producing projects for artists looking to impact culture and inspire others to break out the box. I love the feeling of getting into that zone.
Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not. That’s why it’s been so important for me to discover the why behind all of this. It helped me push through the struggles.
I’ve struggled with trusting myself. I’ve missed opportunities, dealt with shady people, been broke and gotten discouraged many times. It’s a good way to find out what you really want. Pushing through these obstacles has helped me grow as a person, and strengthened my confidence in my ability to actually stick this out.
Ultimately, I had to reconnect with the love behind creating. Ego can easily get in the way and slow you down.
Please tell us more about what you do, what do you specialize in and most proud of.
I specialize in creating the soundtracks for storytellers. I’m big on helping artists discover their artistic identities, develop a radio-ready sound and earn from their music.
Probably best known for developing a sound for the artists I work with. I build relationships with my clients and get to know who they are deeply so I can translate that into their music.
I’m most proud of my work with Inky Johnson and D. Horton. Inspiring music that challenges people to get out of the boxes they’ve created for themselves and make an impact. Their music has affected so many lives already. Then, artists like Rylic Zander or Zip K have challenged me musically to go beyond my comfort zone.
Some of these artists have gone on to land distribution deals, be nominated for Espy awards, and accrue millions of streams in over 100 countries. Sounds like we’re getting there, but there’s so much more to learn and do.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Atlanta has all the food, music, culture, and style you need in one place. Plus, it’s dope to see people that look like you making an impact in every facet of life. On the other hand, you have to learn the difference between looking good and doing well.
