Meet Kyle Denis of Funkadelic Threads

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Denis.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Music has been a major part of my life since as far back as I can remember. Between singing car rides with my Mother and sisters to sneaking down to the basement to watch Pink Floyd’s The Wall with my Pops at age 7, there was always music being played.

Banging on pots and pans turned into playing drums, then the Fender The Strat Pack came along, and I finally landed on bass before high school in 2005. I had a great opportunity to play music with two of my best friends for 10 years under different monikers which unfortunately came to an end in 2016 as a 4 piece rock act called King Coda.

That same show at Smith’s Olde Bar I met the guys in Bird Dog Jubilee and have been playing with them ever since.

As my original band was coming to an end, I was searching for a creative outlet that would shine a light on the budding local music & arts scene here in Atlanta. After graduating from Tech in 2015, I had some extra time on my hands so I started the blog that would eventually become Funkadelic Threads.

Since our humble beginnings in 2016, Funkadelic Threads has been connecting the movers and shakers in the scene as a community organization. We have grown into a digital media house that hosts our own online publication, media database, and social channels to build community while engaging our market.

We have had around 19 photographers and writers contribute in the past year. Currently we have 23 members in our FunkMob which include 9 active team members, 6 passive, & 8 partner organizations: Guilty Peach Productions, Don’t Fret Ent, Medicine for the Soul Ent, Rhythm-N-News, Wren Designs, Present Tense Artist Solution, Ear Elf (ear protection), and Dog House Atlanta (creating live stream capability and visuals).

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been roses all the way. After the initial honeymoon phase of starting something new faded, I found myself getting stressed and like there was not enough time in a day. Balancing a 9-6 and a moonlight passion project is tough.

What saved the organization and my sanity was falling back on the great people that make Funkadelic Threads what it is today. Once I put the committed individuals in director roles, the clouds cleared and we all started working together more effectively.

I want to say thanks to the Management Team:
Kyle Denis (Editor-in-Chief)
Savannah Elder (Creative Director & Editor)
Anthony Prince (Content Director)
Luke Klaer (Operations Director)
Andrew Najjar (Photography Director)
Soon ‘Mac’ Kweon (Media Director)
Chris Kimling (Video Director)

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Funkadelic Threads story. Tell us more about the business.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe there is an aspect of luck in every new acquaintance I make in the music business. I like to think that the great partnerships I’ve made were caused by serendipity or synchronicity, but its the time and effort that you put into each relationship that is the x-factor.
