Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Jackson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kyle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Originally, I’m from Oakland California. I came out here for school at Morehouse College where I studied Business Marketing and in the dorm room at Hubert Hall is where I discovered my passion for music. Just watching my peer’s freestyle late nights and just that vibe inspired me. I always wrote poetry to my girlfriends growing up and participated in spoken word competitions but I never thought about pursuing a career in music. The furthest I got with that was my Motto freestyle in the 8-9th grade but after that, I was mostly just focused on sports. It wasn’t until my sophomore year where I actually made my first record which was recorded on a laptop in my boy Reggie’s room and uploaded to SoundCloud. My mom had a boyfriend at the time name Tim Dawg Patterson who grew up with Diddy and was part of the Bad boy movement. He always used to tell me I had the voice and the personality for it so I decided to really give it a shot. My whole life my mom has worked at a radio station and she currently works at Radio One so I just started to connect the dots that “God” gave me and realized this was the path for me. I have been running with it ever since.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has not been smooth what so ever until recently I was one foot in one foot out trying to finish up this school thing. I also lost a lot of people along the way. However, now that I’m done I plan on giving it everything I have these next few years and see where it really takes me. Even though the journey has been rough, I never gave up because I could see the progression not only with my craft but the people around me. Even my mom now is all in with what I’m doing because she can see I have a real passion and talent for it. It also helps that I’ve obtained thousands of fans that have been supporting and telling me that I’m inspiring them and making a difference in their lives. The Dm’s I receive on a daily basis just gives me all the reason to never stop.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I really consider myself an artist, not just a rapper. You can hear in my music just the natural melodies I have that really don’t sound like any other artist out. Me being from California but also moving to Atlanta and having this experience out here has allowed me to be more creative with my sound. I don’t sound like just a Cali rapper and I don’t sound like I’m from Atlanta either. I’m really creating my own sound and that’s what will separate me from the other Artist out here. When you hear me, you’re going to know that’s Kyle Jackson. I was blessed with a distinctive voice and I believe that’s what will carry me to the next level.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I believe the industry will remain the same. It’s up to the artist to set the trends. However, I believe there will always be a lane for Trap, Mumble rap (or whatever old heads want to call it), and conscious music. Nobodies going to have the same mood all the time and nobody wants to listen to conscious music in the club. Music is about having fun and expressing yourself so no matter what lane you consider yourself in as long as you stay genuine and the music is good people are going to listen.
