Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyng Drew.
Kyng, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Seems like I’ve been here a lot of times already mentally, just never grounded myself to the physical portion of it, same destination, different path type ordeal. But this time just feels like the RIGHT one. It all started for me when I was a git, rapping on a green box in a neighborhood off of Roosevelt Hwy in College Park GA (37 sides) with 2 number 2 pencils. It was just me, my mother, my two younger brothers, and my moms oldest child, making a way. My sound was always different. And different wasn’t always good. I was my own wall. I allowed doubt and judgment from other individuals to slow down any and every attempt I made to pursue this passion of mines. I aimed to establish my “difference”. Everyone was dressing the same, sounding the same, and looking the same. So much that it became difficult to NOT think that everyone had been turned into robots! hahaha. I knew that holding onto your identity was important because you are who YOU are and no one can ever replicate your soul. So I set off to make it where my identity, my difference, shined bright like the rising sun.
Has it been a smooth road?
I tell myself every sunrise that “Today is a reflection of my past and an insight into my future,” which is VERY bright. It hasn’t always been the case though. I’ve never wanted to be judged by the zip code I grew up in but growing up in College Park GA, judgment and prosecution was apart of daily living. In a community that found itself riddled with crime, drugs, and death, my way of drowning out the noise of sirens was thru music. February of 2017 after making my 1st Music Video called “Success,” I was aiming to make my 2nd one called “Why I’m Here,” a song which I never released, I was robbed at gunpoint for my car and laptop by some 6 people in front of my son who was 7 at the time, and I fell into a mental slump which took me away from music AGAIN. All the music I’d ever done in my life was taken that night. Felt like my past had been washed away. Then in January of 2018, I was hospitalized and told that there was a tumor on my right adrenal gland and that further test was needed to rule out if it was cancerous. Seems that there was something beautiful hidden in that unknown because, during that waiting period of not knowing and going through those emotions, I had a face to face with myself. I envisioned myself on my deathbed looking back on my life and regretting the times I lacked the strength and belief in myself to pursue my passion, And I decided that while I am still here, I have time to make it into a reality. So I started branding myself and here I am!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I established my company “Million Made Club Company” or 1MC in 2016 and it became officially mines at the end of 2017. I felt like I finally had a purpose. I dropped my 1st EP on all major platforms entitled “Tha Voice” August 10, 2018. 2019 I have released my new hit single “Will Of Fire” on SoundCloud, youtube, and my company’s personal website eyeamkyng.com. There are many layers to 1MC Tha Company. There is 1MC Apparel and 1MC Music. I am a musician, entrepreneur, seamstress, embroiderer, engineer, producer, graphic designer, majority of all that I know is self-taught and taught by my brother Chris Lawson, owner of IMPWR Visuals.
We specialize in providing quality music that can be heard by all ages. We don’t promote violence, we promote protecting those you love. We don’t promote slander of genders, we encourage and uplift. We do clothing and food drives throughout the city without publicly announcing it. I feel that things from the heart should never be forced to script… otherwise it doesn’t flow natural, I learned at an early age that whatever your name is attached to reflects you. As a company, I am most proud of myself and the strength I’ve shown to not conforming to today’s society by changing up who I am in order to get farther in this world. Being someone else never suited me well. I am different. I am proof that no matter where you’ve come from, or what walk of life you have taken, that if you love and believe in yourself enough to physically go for and manifest those things you desire, that it is possible to attain. I aim to be a positive influence on our youth and usher in a new day for hip hop.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely. I feel that people everywhere are looking for SOMETHING to inspire them. SOMETHING to listen to that makes them feel as if being themselves is ok. Music should be healing. It should make you want to harm someone, in my opinion, people have been conditioned to mimic the lifestyles other artist are putting out there so now they want to rob, steal, and kill more, just to get up enough money to ball like the rappers do. My aim is to reinvent the wheel. My music has substance and a message, with the whole Metro Atlanta going through its remodeling, and the increase of individuals moving down here, I would strongly recommend a person to drown out any negative noises and go for whatever they desire. Atlanta is Black Hollywood! I love it here. Been here my whole life. Everyone is bringing their business here. And from my College Park skies, it looks very bright. Been in the dark for too long!
