Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakeisha Butts.
Lakeisha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Beginning in February 2014, there was not a Platinum Peaches Dance Team. We began as a very small cheer leading squad located near Peachcrest Elementary. It was not in my plans to become a cheer coach, however something told me to take it, make the best of it and go from there! Very soon after I knew my passion was very much still very connected in DANCE! I then made the humble choice of converting my cheer team into Platinum Peaches Dance Team. Alongside with my very talented Cousin Brittany Martin, we trained young girls ages 7-12 in the art of what is now called majorette dance. After my sister Sharita Jones graduated from College in December 2014 we then decided to extend or teams age to 5-18 years, ever since we have Training /Mentoring girls within our community with much grace, poise, and passion! Our hard work, Dedication, and strong belief in God has landed us where we are today, which is in our own home/studio housing 50 plus beautiful and talented young ladies. We plan to continue to strive for our girls to have a place in their community where we are there for them not only to train them in dance, but to prepare and mold them to be strong and excel in life and all of their future endeavors! We are more than just a team; we are a family!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all! Our greatest struggle has been learning to balance our personal lives, and then life with the studio. It has never been easy having your own children at home, and then attending to 50 other children two or more days within a week. Competitive dance can be very busy and we’ve caught ourselves wanting to give up numerous of times but we then would pick ourselves back up and wonder what would that teach our girls? Giving up will never be option within our home, so we remained strong and kept in mind that we all have purpose, the studio has a purpose and we are here to stay.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
We are a competitive dance team serving young ladies 5-18 years of age. Outside of Atlanta we enjoy traveling to compete as well. You may have seen us compete in Alabama, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Tifton Georgia just to name a few. We specialize in Majorette Dance, with myself with nearly over 15 years of experience, Coach Brittany over 15 years. Coach Sharita over ten years! I believe what sets us apart from others is that we are a family owned studio which automatically sets the tone for the girls to uphold those family-oriented standards towards each other as well. We also believe in them and treat them as if they’re are own. We teach them things that will go far beyond the world of dance. We encourage them to not be like us, but to be better! We give each dancer the tools they will need to always have great confidence, leadership skills, and class in everything they may do. Being a Peach Dancer is not easy but we ensure to give the girls an ultimate experience that they will never forget.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe that being caring, optimistic, open minded, level headed, flexible, and spiritually connected is most important with operating a dance studio. It takes a well-grounded person to be able to balance the pressure of being a competitive coach and still making time for friends and family. All of these characteristics represents me a person and business owner, being me has made me successful!
