Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Louis.
Laura, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started a little country girl from a small town, Pensacola, Florida. I saw a lot of divorces, and I hoped to discover how not to become another statistic. Most people in my neighborhood were either selling drugs or drugs. Earned my Ph.D. As a method of self-discovery, then my passion was channeled into a desire to be that change, I wanted to see in my community. That drew me to being a couples therapist and starting Atlanta Couple Therapy.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, not smooth by far. I didn’t come from a rich family, so I had to pay my way through college at Florida State University, working two jobs. I was on food stamps to survive. When I started Graduate school at Fordham University, I couldn’t even afford cable. But through perseverance, I was able to earn not just my master’s but laster my PhD. from Howard University. The next year after graduation, I launched Atlanta Couple Therapy.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
What sets me apart is I am not just a psychologist, but I am also an author, speaker, and a wife. I take complex mental challenges that entrepreneur couples face and teach them how to avoid divorce by teaching them my blueprint to building a rock solid marriage. I have over ten years of experience in helping distant couples hit the reset button after infidelity, experience better intimacy, and enhancing communication. My therapeutic approach has been influenced by worldwide training in Brazil, Mexico, London, and Haiti. I have conducted hundreds of seminars transforming relationships all over the world. I am most proud of having my work being featured in the Wall Street Journal, NBC, PBS, and Cosmopolitan magazine, to name a few. My book, Marital Peace, is a valuable resource intended to support couples through the challenges of marriage.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Freedom to work when I want where I want joy from seeing the couples I server living a happy, full marriage. I look for markers such as saving marriages from divorce.
