Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Poindexter.
Laura “TheSoulWriter” Poindexter is a native New Yorker (Harlem) and was raised by her paternal grandmother after the sudden death of her mother at age six. Laura always had a love for the arts and was a dancer for The Dance Theater of Harlem in her pre-teen years. Always know for being creative and talented even as a child, she would first have to experience some of the darker sides of life before arriving at this point and time.
Laura is a recovering addict with over thirty years sober. She worked in the field of Health and Human Services for over eighteen years, for organizations such as Drug Court, the Veterans Administration, and Johns Hopkins Center for Social Concern. She felt it was her duty to give back to the community. She was passionate about her work but she never gave up on her dreams of becoming creative.
In 2010 Laura suffered a devastating loss. Drugs were no longer an option, so she prayed about what she should do. God answered her prayers and told her to write. She initially rejected this answer from God not quite understanding the connection. However, when she finally conceded and began to write, words poured onto the page. She began writing poetry as a way to release. Her poetry postings on social media received positive responses. This would be her first step to becoming a screenwriter.
Laura’s poetry landed her radio interviews and magazine articles and in 2014 she would launch “The Literary Corner” Blog Talk Radio. TLC would go on to produce 213 free shows for Poets, Musicians, Small Businesses, and nonprofit organizations. Her interviews would include Chrisette Michele, Omar Gooding, Deb Antney (Love & Hip-Hop) and many others.
Laura relocated to the Atlanta area in 2016 and used all of her tools to learn the in’s and outs of the entertainment industry. and admits, she is still learning. After landing speaking roles in two award-winning, independent movie shorts, Laura landed the lead as Sonya Steele in the stage play “Where It All Goes Down” which is in its second season. Her first full-length indie film will be released summer 2018, in which she plays the supporting role of Aunt Lisa in the film “MARVELOUS”.
Laura got her feet wet with production when she was hired as project manager for a small budget, semi-scripted short “The Proposal” she knew right after the completion of that project, this was it and the time was now. Her new screenplay “Choose This Day” is a movie short loosely based on her life. This movie challenges the power of influence. The screenplay is currently entered in the Get Connected screenwriters contest-ATL and the Hip-Hop-screenwriters contest in NYC. Her strategy is to become an award-winning screenplay prior to filming.
She is excited to be working with local Atlanta actors in a fresh and comprehensive manner by keeping the actors fully immersed in the movie-making process. The film is 80 percent cast with the exception of two roles to be cast with well-known names and extra roles. Laura believes that she made the right move by relocating to Atlanta. She is excited about her future in the industry and grateful that her dreams managed to stay alive long enough for her to see them become a reality.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
To be honest, it has everything but smooth. I didn’t expect it to be easy, not at all. I was a middle-aged woman moving to a new city, with no real support system or experience in the industry. Also, I choose not to work when I arrived because, in order to accurately gauge my potential for success, I had to give the game 100%. That was the ultimate sacrifice. There were some days I did not even know how I was going to eat the next day, but it all worked out
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Unshakable Faith Productions story. Tell us more about the business.
I am Unshakable Faith Productions, my business starts with me. I am an Actress, Writer, Poet, and Producer. My experiences since arriving lead me to want to provide many of the same services other production companies provide but with a higher level of excellence and integrity. I offer project management, casting and administrative services to individuals and or production companies seeking someone with the organizational skills to keep their project on track. I also work administratively to assist them in understanding the business side of entertainment.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Lol… you got jokes! It’s been a very long time since I accredited luck with having anything to do with my progression/success or lack thereof. Life and business are the same with respect to the ups and downs. I do my best and expect the best in life and business. Aware that life presents variables that are out of my control. I know that this statement may be overused but “It is what it is’. The only thing we ever have control over is how we respond to; what it is. It has nothing to do with luck.
