Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Haney.
Hi Lucy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Thank you so much for having me, I suppose I’ll start from the very beginning.
From a young age, I have always had an interest in writing, design, and artistic expression especially in the name of activism. During my teen years, music was my outlet. I learned how to play ukulele, guitar, and dulcimer. This lead to writing and producing my own EP at age 15 as well as recording at Studio 19 with the guidance of studio owner and music business expert Larry Rogers. During his extensive career, Larry has worked with notable artists such as Rick Nelson, Billy Swan, and Charly McClain.
As a young adult, I wanted to continue my endeavors in the realm of journalism. I pursued a BA in Communications at Oglethorpe University. During the Covid-19 Pandemic, I longed to learn and support my community. I interned as a Contact Tracing Supervisor at the Georgia Department of Public Health. Having the ability to work with healthcare professionals on important subjects fascinated me. From there on, I was inspired to continue a career of impactful health communications that connect and serve my community.
After I graduated college in May 2022, I started a position as the Manager of Marketing and Communications at the Georgia Pharmacy Association as well as the Editor of the Georgia Pharmacy Journal. Working at GPhA allows me to support the growth and development of the pharmacy profession in Georgia, as well as to contribute to Georgian’s overall access to healthcare (after all, pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare professionals)! My favorite part of my job is pushing the envelope to create modern, thorough content that helps people learn something in an exciting way. Being the youngest person at my office, I have learned much about responsibility. I am proud to say that I carry the same amount of responsibility and deep regard for my work as my seasoned colleagues. It is difficult beginning a professional career as a young woman, as you often have to prove yourself in many different levels both skill wise and culturally. My one piece of advice for young women about to start their careers is remember your worth. Remember your accomplishments, pride yourself on them consistently, and keep them up.
If you are a pharmacist reading this article, I encourage you to become a member of your state association. (Here is more about GPhA: gpha.org/about/#mission) To me, a sign of success in a career is the ability to build meaningful relationships.
In my free time, I continue working on music projects. I am currently working with the Atlanta-based alternative country artist Sid Jerr-dan on his next album. Check out his story here: https://www.wabe.org/
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My educational and creative journey has not been easy by any means, but it has been rewarding. For many years I struggled with immense exhaustion and often falling ill without much explanation. In 2022, I was diagnosed with narcolepsy which really changed my perception of what “being tired” means. Sleep can really impact all aspects of a person’s life and is not something everyone can simply “push through”. Pay attention to what your body tells you, and if you have a rare condition, don’t be afraid to educate others about it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I would consider myself a professional but also a creative. As a magazine editor of a pharmacy publication, I get to create both interesting and informative material. I am constantly trying to learn about all aspects of pharmacy, and there is so much to learn. I am most proud of my ability to consistently create work that people who are very knowledgeable are still able to learn something new from. Pharmacists have to be very multifaceted. They often manage workflow, deal with complex billing issues, and still must make time to be excellent patient educators. I admire this about pharmacists, and I too believe that I wear many hats in my occupation. I serve as a PR professional, email marketer, graphic designer, website designer, social media manager, and magazine editor in my position.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I really love that Atlanta truly houses creatives in all areas. Everyone who I have interacted with in the creative field here is so interesting and self-driven. In regard to music and film, we have just as much talent as cities like Nashville and LA. The only thing I really dislike is our traffic and constant gentrification, but that is definitely present in any city.
