Today we’d like to introduce you to Maekaeda Gibbons.
Maekaeda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey started out of my personal need to find authentic products that I can use to make my skin feel great and smell heavenly. Like many women who indulge in external self care, I rather enjoy a good bath and or shower with premium products that left me feeling like an aristocrat. However I stopped using commercial soaps, perfumes and other body care products after a breakout while wearing popular brands. Since then, I would mix my own blend of natural oils and wear them out everywhere. Over the next few years, I would receive tons of compliments from everyone about the fragrances I wore. While on that journey, I also discovered the benefit of incorporating sugar scrubs into my daily routine and researched how to make them myself. I then combined my love for smelling good and making sugar scrubs. After sometime I became known for my distinct fragrances. My coworkers would come up to me and ask, “you were just in the elevator, weren’t you?”… I finally caved and started making it for some of my close friends and the moment snowballed from that point.
The journey has been amazing I must say. I’ve had somewhat of a “If you build it, they will come” experience. My community support has been outstanding. At our launch party, we were almost sold out of all the products, which I totally did not expect but it gave me the confidence I needed to say ok this could be something magnificent.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have to say that I have been blessed along this journey. All of my clients, near and far have embraced my labor of love and it has been so rewarding to see and hear how something as simple as making people smell great has an impact on their day. I look at everything as and adventure or a lesson. The road might be rough sometimes but its all a part of the journey. I came into this business knowing that it may not be always be sunflowers, cotton candy and unicorns but I believe so deeply in our mission that none of the adversities we may face would ever compare to the reward of the outcome of the successful execution of our mission.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Brown Sugar Babe LLC story. Tell us more about the business.
At Brown Sugar Babe, we are an all natural body care line. Our current line up of products include: body scrubs, body oils, beard oils, facial scrubs, hair moisturizer. Our line of great smelling and natural products aim to incorporate aromatherapy into your everyday grooming routine. Our fragrances are familiar yet distinctive. Keeping inline with our aromatherapy goals we also offer soy candles. Our line of products will constantly evolve to meet the needs of our audience while maintaining our mission.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The natural hair and body care product industry is set to outpace the big bottle brands in the next 5-10 years due to the fact that people are becoming more awakened to the products they consume internal and external. We’re excited to be a part of the beauty industry.
