Today we’d like to introduce you to Makayla Miller.
Makayla, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was first introduced to photography during my junior year of high school. I was taking an Audio-video and Production class, and with that, I was able to begin taking pictures for the school’s news and yearbook. Photography quickly became more than just a grade to me and I fell in love with it. I didn’t decide to turn my favorite hobby into a business until I went to college and realized how lucrative it would be. My grandparents surprised me with my first camera during my freshman year, I joined a few organizations on campus as a photographer to get experience and I guess you can say the rest is history.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think any road worth traveling is smooth because there are bound to be a few bumps along the way. Some of my biggest struggles actually came from within myself rather than outside factors. I have a hard time getting outside of my own head as far as comparing my work to others and it’s a major set back. Another struggle of mine would be having anxiety about ideas I may be developing. I’m a huge perfectionist when it comes to my work, so I tend to overthink every aspect of it and become very analytical instead of just going for it; It’s definitely something I’m working on. I’m also not the wealthiest person and doing photography is anything but cheap, so it can be challenging to afford certain equipment but I’ve always made what I have work for me.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the KaySnapped Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is KaySnapped Photography. I’m a freelance photographer and I’m known for my catchy brand name. I chose KaySnapped because Kay is my nickname and whenever I work with a client I put my all into it and make sure the finished product exceeds their expectation; I “snap”. I am most proud of the growth I have seen within my business. I think what sets me apart from others is my versatility and my journalistic eye. I don’t have one set style within my work. When people view my portfolio, they will see a little bit of everything and I like that because it shows how well-rounded I am within my craft. I also majored in Journalism in college and I think that coincides well with my work because I try to get all angles of my subject and make the viewer feel something when seeing my work.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’ve never really believed in good or bad luck. However, I do believe in blessings and getting back what you put into the world. I have been blessed with a great support system and other creative friends that are there to give me constructive criticism when I need it. I think having that has been beneficial to not only the growth of my business but growth within myself as well.
