Meet Malik King

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malik King.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I got into photography about five years ago when I found my first Nikon camera. However, I grew up watching my father carry his camera everywhere he went while I was growing up in Queens, New York. Everyone knew my father in the neighborhood for carrying his camera at all time.

I got into street photography and photo journalism as a hobby. All of the photos I take I mail to men and women in state and federal prisons nationwide so that they can see the events of the world that they have long been removed from. Some of them have been away for as many as 30-years for non-violent drug offenses. You can read more about these stories at: www.candoclemency.com at your convenience.

Please tell us about your art.
My photography is nothing more than artistic expression and capturing people and things in their natural element. I hope that people continue to recognize my artistic creativity and at the end of the day take something valuable from it that they can share with others.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
My advice is to get out there and network with other likeminded individuals and ask them a ton of questions about the craft. That’s how you learn and become great.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can see my work on my Instagram page which is: @Leekstreetphotos.

Malik is a dear friend; a gifted photographer with a huge, compassionate heart; as illustrated by his work with Can-Do Clemency & prison outreach. If you see him shooting on the streets of Atl, please give him a hug from me. Beautiful photos and great story — much love Malik.
