Meet Mar Na Carter of Mar Na’s Body Shop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mar Na Carter.

Mar Na, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The inspiration for Mar Na’s Body Shop started in 2010. A family member of mine was having skin issues and was unable to use store-bought products. I decided to do some research and found out that I could create something that would not harm their skin. I made my first product, Peppermint Body Butter. The family member used my body butter and her skin started to clear up. I knew I was on to something.

A few years went by and people kept asking me to make more Peppermint Body Butter. One day my sister was using a body butter that was very expensive and was small in portion. I told her I could make one that was less expensive and bigger in size. I decided to start my business on my birthday, Jan 1st, 2018. I have been making body butters for my sister, my family and other people ever since that day.

Has it been a smooth road?
There has been some struggles along the way. As a black female entrepreneur, there are hurdles to overcome, like finances and time. I was in school, raising my son and working a full-time job when I first started. I was a struggling single mother trying to have enough money to pay my bills and buy supplies as well for my business. I had finally graduated from college and was able to find a job that paid a decent amount of money. I decided to invest more of my own money to start Mar Na’s Body Shop. I still struggle with time management but I am doing better.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mar Na’s Body Shop – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The company’s name was supposed to be Mar Na’s Collection. But believe it or not, someone else has a company by that name. So, I decided to call it Mar Na’s Body Shop because our motivation is to help assist people to heal their bodies holistically. We specialize in body butters and body scrubs but we wanted to expand our brand to provide an alternative for self-care and wellness. Customers have said that their skin has changed in the most positive way and their dark marks are fading as well. One of the things we are proud of is our close connection to our customers. We aim to provide great customer service and treat our customers like family.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the booming black-owned businesses in Atlanta. Even though I am from Philadelphia, I have seen over the years my people have build successful black-owned businesses and are willing to network with other entrepreneurs outside of Atlanta.
