Meet Maria Clark

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Clark.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started taking formal piano lessons at the age of nine…I had always been singing in chorus from kindergarten every year through the 12th grade of highschool…

At the age of 16, I began formal vocal studies with Mrs. Laura English Robinson at Spelman College and went on to college at Florida State University double majoring in piano and vocal performance…I transferred to Manhattan School of Music after my second year and graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from there…I have been performing across the US and worldwide since then and graduated from GA State University with a Master’s degree in Vocal Performance…I have enjoyed a career of Instructing my own students in Voice and Piano, along with performing during this time.

I am now the Coordinator of Vocal Studies and Applied Music at Spelman College and am also a Voice Professor at Emory University…

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road…Having a career as a Classical Performing Artist is very competitive and technically difficult also…One must have a natural gift as well as “love” to stay devoted. It is an expensive field to pursue and stay active in as well…

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am most proud of having the honor of being a Voice Professor at the prestigious schools of Spelman College and Emory University…I used to visit these schools as a child and student of music and attend my own music lessons there…I would have never dreamed that I’d be a Professor at these wonderful schools!

I am also proud of Vocal competitions that I have won, such as the West Palm Beach Opera Competition and the American Traditions Vocal Competition held each year in conjunction with the Savannah Music Festival…I am proud of the performing that I’ve done with the Atlanta Opera and Symphonic and concert work that I have done…

I am also proud of being the Mother of a six years old beautiful little boy along with being gifted enough to be a musician…While difficult to balance, I have the best of both worlds.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Debuting a Carnegie Hall in a vocal competition that I had won…
