Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisa Cotton.
Hi Marisa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In 2016, I was fired my job on my day off. Yes, on my day off like Craig from the movie Friday. And I was terminated for something I didn’t even do. While I was released on what was considered wrongful termination, at that point, with a newborn on my side, I vowed to never allow anyone to have the opportunity to dictate my ability to feed my family again. For the first time ever, I felt helpless. As a new mom and a new wife, I felt defeated in my new life.
From then, I decided to go full time in my side business to make it my main business. I knew I was an entrepreneur at heart, I had it honest. My father was an Entrepreneur in the skill of Heating and Air System, as well as an accountant. He taught me life and survival skills. He also taught me how to survive in Corporate America, as a woman, but more importantly, as a black woman. He prepared me for life.
I started Business Consulting on the side of my 9 to 5 in 2012. But after getting fired in 2016 for something I didn’t even do, I knew it was time for me to elevate this my business. I made my business converted my business into an LLC and started to brand and market my business.
During this pandemic alone, I’ve helped 5,000 businesses properly establish, grow, and scale their businesses. I then taught them how to create a 9 to 5 exit strategy that would allow them to sustain personally, without the perks and pay of their 9 to 5. I’ve done this by teaching them the fundamentals of entrepreneurship. I then created my online learning platform, Everything Business Academy. Think of it as Everything Business 101.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth road, Ha! Have you heard the quote by Woody Allen? “If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.” Of course like any entrepreneur, I had things mapped out. But God had other plans along the way. He actually put more on my plate then I thought I could handle.
He put lessons in my path, roadblocks of loss opportunities along the way, but from every “No”, I took that lesson and plotted my next steps to a yes.
In 2016, I lost my father and I kind of lost my direction and passion. After a brief hiatus, I was back in action, and I came harder than before.
Since the loss of my father, I’ve also had to adjust to being an Entrepreneur in terms of family management. I married my husband in 2016, had my daughter in 2017, and another daughter in 2020. Being a Wife and Mom has definitely changed my entrepreneurial journey. I now have two little ones to push even harder for. I’m creating an Empire for my little girls.
