Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Mundy.
Mark, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Although born into a family of musicians that specialized in Bluegrass and Mountain music, I found all types of music fascinating from an early age. From Bluegrass, Rock, Country and Soul music, there really isn’t any style I won’t try to emulate and produce. I played guitar and bass as a child and had no shortage of teachers as both my parents played in a band (The Bluegrass Generation). My grandparents Roy Westray and Ruth Sutton played in bands as well as many cousins, aunts, uncles, and especially my Brother Matt Mundy, we all taught each other what we were learning in real-time.
At age 13 or so, I first heard “Black Dog” by Led Zeppelin and my mind was suddenly opened up to a new trajectory musically. From there I learned of so many new styles of music. My mom got me my first electric guitar soon after recording. After the electric guitar came, I learned how to bounce two cassette recorders to simulate a multitrack recording. That’s where you record yourself playing a guitar part, then playing that tape while playing another part and recording with the second recorder and so on and so on. That graduated to a 4-track tape recorder and then 8-track reel to reel with my friend Jody Abernathy and then on to digital recording in the early 2000’s. Now with Protools Digital Audio Workstation, the options are limitless.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Performing and Recording are a constant source of Joy in my life, but to try and make a living in either profession is quite a challenge. I have (for the most part) had a “Day Job’ throughout my entire adult life. If I had it to do over again (and advice I try and give youngsters), I probably would have relocated to a more traditionally music-centric town. IE; Nashville, Austin, LA, etc. Not very many scouts out here in Cumming, GA. I should probably say that my life is extremely full as a result of staying grounded here in North Georgia. I wouldn’t have met my Wife Terri if I had left. She is super supportive and encouraging of my music career.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Flossy Monk Studio is a completely grassroots attempt on my part to offer a full-service studio with extremely reasonable rates to folks that want to record their music locally. Having travelled with my band to Nashville many times to record our original material, I am well aware of the cost involved to accomplish a “pro” recording. Coming home under-whelmed several times and wishing we could go back and change things but just couldn’t spend the money or time, I decided to spend the money to make it happen here. My wife encouraged me to get protools and a Mac and get to work! That’s what I did. Since then, I have recorded 2 CDs for My band Across The Wide as well as 15+ other CDs for mostly local artists.
Some other Recordings I’ve done: Frances Mooney and Fontanna Sunset, The Wiseman Brothers, Jayna Jennings, The Mundy Boys, The Billy Jacks and more.
Another thing that I offer here is Band in a Box. Along with my guitar, bass, keys, background vocals, etc., I have quite a stable of musicians only a phone call away to make your recording as complete as you need. Acoustic Guitar and vocal or full-on 5-6 piece band, you can get whatever you want here. All you need is a song and a voice.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I consider myself incredibly lucky to have been born into a family that uses music as not only a source of income but also to spread joy to folks. I am also very lucky to have met so many great musicians from a young age to share these gifts with. During this pandemic, I have facilitated and encouraged fellow musicians to do “remote” recordings. Even though we can’t get together in person, the miracle of music and the internet keeps us so close. Check out Mo Better Blues with Myself, Matthew Mundy, Jeff Sipe and Brad Williams on YouTube
