Today we’d like to introduce you to Marnie Williams.
Marnie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been in the television business for over 20 years and I was looking for a passion outside of the industry. I was a television director at The Weather Channel for almost 10 years and the business can be very taxing mentally, with long hours, working holidays and weekends. Thus, I was in search for a stress reliever, so baking became that for me.
I grew up watching my parents bake for their parties they threw almost every Saturday night in Florida. So, I decided that I wanted to be able to share my family recipes with my friends. Thus, I started baking a few cakes here and there…one thing led to another. I reached out to my mom, Elaine, and presented this idea of “Slice by ME” which the “ME” stands for “Marnie and Elaine.”
We started off with our signature cake: The Black Russian Chocolate Kaluha Cake.
I approached several different local coffee shops and locally owned businesses in the area and asked the owners if they needed help with desserts and off it took. One cake turned into two, then three, then a few different types of dessert. There is no constant, just when the need arises. But yet, it’s my own little business I have dedicated to my mom as a side project of mine.
I can never reveal our recipes, it’s a secret to me and my mom only and that makes it unique.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Baking is my passion. I bake when the need arises when my local businesses and friends reach out to me. The struggle for me is not being able to make this a true “business.” I bake from my kitchen. I don’t have a “store front” or a team helping me. It’s just me. Maybe one day it will become something bigger, but for now, it’s nice to see how my baking brings a smile to people’s faces and the delight in every bite.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Slice by ME – what should we know?
We are a daughter-mother combo baking team! I cannot remember a time when my mom was not baking this this family recipe for holidays, celebrations, events or birthdays in our home. What sets us apart is that we are not a chain, we are family-run. We bake out of our own kitchens. Our company is by word of mouth, literally. We have website and a Facebook page. We don’t have a marketing budget or big plan. It’s small.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mentor has been and will continue to be my parents. Watching them cook and bake since I was younger has always been that influence on me. My biggest supporter is my husband, Tim. He loves when I bake and is proud to see what’s on the plate!
