Meet Marvin Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marvin Mitchell.

Marvin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Sorting through chapters of our lives can be both painful and hurtful, especially when forced to live daily in a spiraling path of defeat and agony. Moreover, imagine living day-to-day in isolation with no family and friends, because your mind recalls the day you were stripped from that childhood place of innocence, left feeling helpless, with no one to tell what happened. The word “trust” has no value at some point, creating additional voids in your life that can never be replaced.

Furthermore, I was forced at an early age to live in multiple foster homes in Kansas City, Missouri, while my parents who lived in the same city, failed to make parenting a priority for me and my seven siblings. I thank God that I am now a survivor of sexual addiction and mental illness, which once took a severe toll on my life. I am truly thankful that I could share my life and my story, as my family and I appeared on the 45th NAACP award-winning show, “Iyanla’s Fix My Life” on OWN: Season 6: Unfinished Business. Today, I am glad that I am striving daily towards excellence and making positive moves to change. Henceforth, I have started a new company, Mitchell Home Health Care and working actively on my autobiography with hope that families of color will use my personal journey to reunite and not be fearful to face family controversies head-on that continues to hurt individual family members mentally and emotionally.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road was never smooth during my childhood. At an early age, I was stripped from my childhood innocence, suffered from depression, became sexually addicted, and searched for love in all the wrong places. I was an emotional wreck. I often blamed others, especially my parents, for their lack of love and support.

Often life gives us great memories to keep us pressing forward, while other times, life takes us into a dark place leading to heartbreak and regret. As a testament of my survival, I realized that I had to either learn from my experiences or wallow in my intimate moments of unhappiness. Telling this depiction of a young boy from St. Louis, Missouri, living in a community stricken by poverty and strife, my now destination must be one of peace and love. My new mantra -“I will learn to forgive those that have hurt me and not place blame, but seek understanding.”

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Escaping my battles that almost took my life, I decided to forgive myself as a means to recovery. I no longer blame others for my past but have used my experiences to help me become a better man. Therefore, since I moved permanently to Atlanta, I chose to begin working in the healthcare industry. I now work in my passion and glad to provide love and support to families. I am so proud that I started my company, Mitchell Home Health Care, located in East Point, Georgia, that has been beneficial to my healing process. I am so elated that my upcoming autobiography will depict my life as a young man with multiple challenges that have now overcome obstacles and started to be a game-changer and inspiration to youth and families who may be separated and broken.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is the acknowledgment of oneself and being a game-changer in society. Furthermore, being a person of good character that holds true to their values and willing to share their personal life experiences to provide hope and inspiration. Success is not just monetary, but a level of happiness that works specifically for you.
