Meet Matthew Alexander

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Alexander.

Matthew, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I found my passion for photography on tour in 2017 while working with a band in North Carolina. Starting with only a cheap, ten-year-old digital camera and a 16GB SD card, I spent years taking courses, upgrading my equipment, and working with a wide variety of companies and clients. I’ve shot countless events, worked with Sirius XM, Lomography, and Shaky Knees, and shoots weddings and engagement photos for clients who prefer an eye for capturing special moments.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Becoming a photographer wasn’t easy. Like most trades, it requires a significant amount of time to learn the eye, how to use the camera equipment, how to use editing software, how to attract clients and manage the business.

I was fortunate enough to have worked in digital marketing and web development prior to my interest in photography, but after seemingly endless days at the office, I knew I wasn’t meant for just a standard 9-5 office job. My initial investment was during a time of complete unemployment, and I didn’t see a significant return for well over a year of working in the photography world.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I do a lot of my photography work at music events, which gives me a special eye for capturing moments. I find that the skills I’ve learned from photographing concerts have translated beautifully into being able to find those timeless shots, the ones that really capture the soul of the subject, whether it’s for weddings, engagements, or family portraits.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I received an email last winter asking if I could be a staff photographer for Shaky Knees. Shaky Knees is one of the biggest festivals here in Atlanta, and being a staff photographer for such a prestigious festival was a dream come true.
