Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra Martinez.
Mayra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Over the pandemic, I had a lot of time on my hands and a desire to pick up on a hobby that I began taking interest in. With only 300$ worth of products, I started practicing on my cousin, my mother, and a couple of supportive friends. I had a room that was outside of my house where I did nails for about two years. It was a small room, but with this I was able to take my business a little more serious and to work on my craft, as well as begin to build the ambiance that I desired for my clients. Eventually, the room became cramped, and I talked to my father about building a bigger shed. Still located in the same area, I now have a mini nail salon.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest struggle was feeling comfortable in my own space. I tried to make the best with what I had. It was a very cramped space and also deteriorated. This was where I started so I was not worried about making it look very pretty, but eventually, it was uncomfortable for me and for this reason I often lost motivation to continue. I frequently would ask myself, “If I feel uncomfortable, could you imagine what your client feels like?” In my new nail room, I was able to decorate everything so it’s very unique and empowering.
Another hard part was managing my time especially because I get to make my own schedule. On top of being an entrepreneur, I’m also a full-time college student and I was never not doing anything. I would be so busy there would be days where I would not get any sleep, any food, or give myself breaks. I would constantly overwork myself, but now I have learned to better adjust to my college schedule and add lunch breaks in between my clients to allow myself to eat, get up and move for a bit.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Nail tech located in Atlanta, GA. I do acrylic nails and make custom luxury press-ons. I specialize in acrylic nails ranging from simple and minimalistic to artistic and unique. Personally, I love designs that include hand-drawn nail art, are colorful and funky yet unique. My brand name is Mayrasnailworld so my booking site is space-themed and nail space is decorated so you know that you’re walking into Mayra’s nail world. My business focuses on empowering women through nails.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory involved often exploring the green space and creek in my neighborhood with my family and friends.
