Meet Michelle Braxton of Supper With Michelle in East Point

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Braxton.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been cooking since the age that I could just reach the stove. I spent a lot of time in the kitchen with my Mom, growing up. As I recall, one of the very first things that she taught me how to cook was “cheese grits” and those are a staple in my house even now. With all of the years that I’ve spent in the kitchen, I’ve truly gained a passion for cooking. I love experimenting with all types of seasoning and ingredients. I grew up in the south, but I have a love of foods from all over the world. And on any given day you may find me cooking anything from Collards Greens with Buttermilk Cornbread to a South Indian style Vegetable Dal.

I’ve always loved photography and all things creative and when “social media” started becoming more and more popular, I found myself sharing some of the dishes that I would prepare at home, with friends and family via Facebook and shortly thereafter, on Instagram. It was because of their encouragement that I decided to start “Supper With Michelle.”

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’d say at this point in my life; time is always a factor. I work full-time during the day, so trying to keep a good balance is very important. I have to remind myself to step away from the computer, put my phone down, get out of the kitchen, and just LIVE. Spend time with my other half, meet up with friends, travel, and/or read a good book, You know….those types of things. As crazy as it may sound, it’s so easy to get engrossed in work and forget to have fun.

Please tell us about Supper With Michelle.
“Supper with Michelle” is a place where I share some of my recipes and experiences in the kitchen. My diet is mainly vegetarian, although I do eat seafood on occasion, so some would call me a Pescetarian. The type of recipes that I share on my blog/website is a combination of Vegan, Vegetarian, and Pescetarian dishes.

The name “Supper with Michelle” stems from time spent with an amazing woman by the name of Mrs. Marzie Conley. She felt very much like a Grandmother to me and I was so very fortunate that she treated me as such. Years ago, I had the opportunity to spend time with her in her kitchen and it was there that she shared with me a wealth of information. It was not just about cooking that I learned during that time, but more about the sense of pride and love for her family. Grandma would prepare Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and/or yes, sometimes Supper (as she would call it) every day for the family and some of those deep-rooted family values stuck with me as I got older.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Quite honestly, I don’t feel that I would have done anything differently. I always try to stay true to what I believe in. I am not an expert, dietitian or nutritionist; however, in recent years, I’ve made many personal strides in trying to maintain a “healthier” lifestyle, not just in what I eat, but in everything I do. Back in 2009, I lost around 90 pounds. It did not happen overnight, but it did happen after I made the decision to start being more conscious of the things I was eating and to become more physically active(I love running/jogging). I always say everything in moderation and always try to find a good balance that fits well with your lifestyle.
