Meet Michelle Dawes Birt of Real Chicks Rock! in South West Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Dawes Birt.

Michelle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always privately struggled about what a woman was supposed to look like, act and how to relate with others. It became clearer to me after the birth of my son that people (particularly men) are very visual and respond to what they see. During this time, women were not afraid or ashamed of showing off who they were and the attention they were wanting to generate. It happened one day that while I was out shopping with my son that women didn’t treat shopping as a chore but as a place where they can model and be seen. Again, men notice that immediately and I began to question for myself – Am I not a women because I don’t wear high heels stilettos while shopping? Am I not a REAL woman? So, I gave it some thought and I came up with a design for a t-shirt called Real Chicks Rock Chucks! At that time, I was wearing sneakers quite often. Do I lose my eligibility as an attractive woman because of that? The t-shirt created a buzz but then I thought that all women don’t wear sneakers especially chucks all the time. Then calling it Real Chicks Rock! Hit me and it’s been in flight ever since. Real Chicks Rock! is designed to inspire, empower and motivate the masses by way of community service, the arts (e.g. music, internet radio talk show), public speaking, mentoring and the t-shirt line. We want to help women the tools that they need to overcome insecurity, self-doubt and be more comfortable with who they are. The REAL person that resides inside of us. Real Chicks Rock! Also collaborates and partners with organizations that will activate, support and empower community service.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s had its difficulties in just remaining consistent, getting people to understand the concept and being consistent with the brand’s messaging. We’re always looking to align ourselves with other entities that working towards raising the vibrations for others especially women. Constantly, looking for those entities and staying plugged in can be a steady task.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are designed to empower, motivate and inspire all women by providing tools to help them become and/or remain secure with their identity. We’ve aligned with several organizations and entities to help give back to communities, women and children in helping them get back on their feet or inform them of ways to be successful both professionally and personally. We’ve used music in the background to help create comfortable and inviting settings where we can have networking events and fundraisers to help organizations we’ve aligned with. Using the media platform (Internet Talk Radio Show) has all us to have a voice and a platform to discuss the topics, issues and challenges that vitally important to women, children and men.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is a great city to pursue any dream, goal or passion. It’s a big town more than it is a city and that allows people to have access to resources to get things going. Being able to do what I’ve done thus far is a little unbelievable and I have so much more ground to cover. However, I’ve remained determined to continue to push, adjust and adapt when necessary to reach the masses.

Anyone starting out has to not give up but get connected with likeminded individuals that are entrepreneurs, risk takers, change agents and goal getters. Study and research the area of expertise that you are trying to get into. Get a few mentors that can coach and mentor you on your journey. Get a good team in place, even if it’s just one person that can support and help you. You can’t do everything so learn how to share some of the work load with individuals that believe in you and/or your destiny.
