Today we’d like to introduce you to Catherine A. Moore.
Catherine A., please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was a kid, I drew all the time. I designed water parks, video games, clothing, board games, and houses, using drawing as a medium to actualize my ideas. I drew and painted all throughout high school, taking every art class I could, but by the time I reached college, I couldn’t see a tangible path as to how art could lead into a career. After every semester I’d cut all of my doodles out of my notebooks from my classes and would keep the doodles but trashed the notebooks, so figured I had some disjoint in my priorities. I ended up majoring in Psychology but knew I had to take a chance and go back to art. I ended up applying to the Savannah College of Art and Design where I received my MFA in Illustration, and have been freelancing and teaching for the past six years.
Has it been a smooth road?
It took me years to get financially stable after grad school, when I was adjuncting, building my portfolio, and taking every commission and freelance job I could get. Since becoming an Assistant Professor, I’ve had the freedom to be more selective about what kind of jobs I look for and receive, and, at the same time, the quality of my clients has increased from the work I did building my freelance business over the past few years.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
We had family friends that whenever we visited with, the kids would always put on a theatrical production. One year we did the Price is Wrong. My sister and our friend Annie played contestants who were housewives. Annie came from a state where it was legal to be married to a house, my sister came from a state where it was not legal to be married to a house.
What are your plans for the future?
My experience of the recent election has been a call to action for me. I’ve crash coursed myself over the past seven years into learning the technical skills of the illustration trade and want to use those skills for social change. Learning to draw and paint is just like learning how to write. Once you know how to do it, you can use those skills to do or express anything. It’s about more than just the skill and the medium, it’s the voice you put behind it. My style of illustration can become a good creative box to work ideas into, but my ideas often range beyond static media to the possibilities of app and game design, and of public art. And I’ll never be beyond creating a good pun for pun’s sake, ’cause, hey, art is fun.
