Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitchell Moran.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started in Colorado. I graduated from the Colorado Film School in Denver, where I studied acting for the screen and film production. In my final year, I cast and directed my first short film and got a true feel of the business from behind the camera. In Denver, while working on a horror film, I met my wife Brittany Horn, who is an actor now here in Atlanta with me.
I had always been interested in Casting from an early age. I have always a knack for remembering actors and their entire filmography and odd career facts about them, I had actually auditioned for Jessica Fox who is the owner and casting director for Fox Casting several times for various shows she had been casting. One day, the curiosity of casting kind of hit me, and I decided to email Jessica inquiring if she was possibly hiring or knew of a way I could start in the field. We met for lunch, chatted about the business of Casting and what I wanted to get from it and I’ve been working for her ever since!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a really fun experience. Obviously, there always going to be the struggles of taking on new responsibilities that you’ve never faced before, but Jessica is very understanding and helpful individual. Jessica is very knowledgeable at what she does. She has years of first-hand experience, and it has been a joy to learn from and work under her.
Sometimes there is a frustrating aspect to casting because it is so hard to narrow down who exactly you would pin into a role. So many different actors in-body one specific character that any choice would be right, but you want everyone to get it. The casting department is always rooting for the actor to win and when you have several actors you want to get it, the choice becomes so hard. Sometimes it comes down to some minute detail that no one would have seen coming. Also when you lack options (actors) to match a specific role, it becomes frustrating as your job relies entirely on finding that one person to fit it and it seems there is just so few people to fit the job. It inspires us to make our talent pool as deep as possible from across the country in LA, to right here in Atlanta.
Fox Casting – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are Fox Casting an Atlanta-based casting service specializing in principal casting for film, television, commercials, new media, and industrials throughout the Southeast. Personally, I assist Jessica with the taped auditions we receive from the actors. I help research and find specific actors that fit certain projects we are working on at the moment. I watch the actors performances and help make decisions on who we want to push forward. We’ve built relationships with more than 150 agencies across 15 states.
I’m proud of this company for working with so many local actors here in Atlanta and across the southeast. I’m also proud to see the talent and growth of all actors right here. So many local actors are getting better and better with each audition. We strive on making the in-person audition process fun and exciting and as less stressful as possible for the actors in the room.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
This is a really hard question as success can mean so many different things to different people and in no way does my definition of success resonate with other views. To me success is happiness.
People are so crazed on becoming the best, the most powerful, the richest… But at the end of the day, why would that matter? Material items end with our bodies. They don’t go into the spiritual plane. They do not fill “voids” that our hearts may feel. They are finite. But to me, happiness is infinite. There is no earthly measure on it. No banks, no overdrafts, no end. I think if everyone strived for that more than power and wealth, we would (as a society) be in a much more healthy and satisfying place.
