Today we’d like to introduce you to Myriam Belasse.
Myriam, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My career started in the late 80’s, working in the Fashion and Manufacturing district in New York City. I worked with a few private label companies, working with brands like, Bebe, Cache, Saks, Calvin Klein, J. C. Penny, just to name a few. I worked as technical designer, production coordinator, quality assurance manager.
Working with these company, gave me the opportunity to work and gain a vast knowledge in every area of the industry. In 1999 when China and United States reach a Trade agreement, most companies moved most of their manufacturing to China, causing most companies to down size they work force. About a year after that, I was one of the unfortunate people, who lost my job. I took that opportunity to start my own business in the Fashion Design World.
In 2001, I started my menswear line, “Belasse Menswear” in the heart of the Fashion District, in Manhattan, my show room and studio was located on 149 West 36th street between 7th and 8th Ave. I was fortunate to have the then “International Male Order Catalog” to launch my menswear line. The line was also sold in a few men’s specialty shops in New York. In 2004, I had to make a very difficult decision, to close my show room. With the passion I have for fashion, and after much pray, and soul searching, I decided to move to Atlanta. (one of the best decision I ever made) In 2005 I started Atlanta Sewing and Pattern Making Service, www.asapsewingservice.com simply because I saw a need for this service. Our services include pattern making, sample making, product development and sourcing, We give our clients the opportunity to have hands on in developing their products, after the development, we assist them in manufacturing domestically and internationally. In 2012, we started working with overseas manufactures. Peru, and Bogota and Medellin in Colombia. We are manufacturing 100% Pima tees in Peru, in Colombia, Bags, Shape wear, Jeans etc. and recently Haiti, I personally Visit every manufacturing facility in these countries, making sure that they are in compliance, with no child labor.
In 2011, I launch my women’s wear line, and my online store, www.belassecollection.com and in 2013, I opened my Boutique 2115 Piedmont Road Atlanta, in the Buckhead area. I would like, and have started working on the final chapter of this journey is to mentor and help young designers and entrepreneurs, giving them the guidance and sharing my years of knowledge with them.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been a few obstacles and lots of challenges, along the way, but because I can do most things in this industry, I was able to survive, I am a pattern maker, can sew almost any and every thing, know my fabrics, can source domestically and internationally. when I first open Atlanta sewing and pattern making in 2005, during that time, it was much easier finding sewing machine operators, it became difficult during the years, and therefore had to stop the manufacturing.
Expanding my services in different areas, and revamping when necessary is the key to my survival.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Atlanta sewing pattern making and Belasse Boutique – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My business is a product development business, “We Make Dreams a Reality.”
We assist Designers in developing their collection, Assist companies in developing their products, (can be new inventions) After producing the product, we can either assist in manufacturing domestically or overseas.
We specialize in Pattern Making and production ready samples.
My design and creative knowledge, sets me apart from a lot of companies, when I sit with a client for a consultation, in most cases, I am able to get their vision, and understand direction of the product.
Seeing the smiles on my client’s face, are some of the proud moments in my business.
My 30 plus years in the industry, having work in every aspect, sets me apart.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like this city, because it gives me a quality of life, great restaurants, always something to do, which I couldn’t afford in New York.
I don’t like the crazy traffic.
