Today we’d like to introduce you to Naeemah Mccowan.
Naeemah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey begins in STL where I was born and raised. I started dancing with a group called T.R.O.O.P. (Total Respect Of Other People) at the age of 11 at an after school program and we even perform at “Show Time At The APOLLO“!
At that point I knew this is what I wanna do, dancing helped me too express myself and performing came naturally! Soon after my mother enrolled me into a performing arts middle and high school (Carr Lane & CVPA). There’s where I trained in Ballet, Jazz, Tap & HipHop. I also would train after school with friends where we would dance all night to the wee hours of the morning to get back up and go to school the next day… It wasn’t a joke we took every rehearsal seriously!
Moving forward I booked my 1st major national/overseas tour with Amerie at 17 years old. Then the next year I audition for Sesame Street live an 11month tour, I got the role of Elmo, Abby Cadabby & Zoe performing costume work on the play ”Elmo’s Green Thumb” & I stay on that toured for three years straight!
So I saved my money and decided to move to Atlanta so that my dreams can blossom! In which they did, I had to opportunity to work with all the Major artists I ever desire to dance and choreograph for, example :(TLC, Beyonce, Usher, Missy Elliott, Neyo, Tinashe and Universal Soul Circus). I also worked ok TV Shows (Empire. Star, Disney, America Soul & Greenleaf)!
With the understanding of having faith, working hard, consistency and great energy you can achieve anything you put your mind to! So in January I will be releasing new music, I’m apart of a girl Duo Group call ”MatteBlaq“ I’m so excited for the future the possibilities are endless!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, there’s always bumps along the road! I struggled with being one of the smallest petite female dancers in the industry but that never stopped me. That actually made me dance bigger to where you wouldn’t even notice!
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about your work?
Well I have two businesses my 1st is My Group MatteBlaq LLC. And with this business, any investments or money we put into it will be accounted for, example Videos, photoshoots, shows Wardrobe and rehearsal time!
My next business is Beyond The Movement LLC. This Business is for my clothing line! I have created a dance pant that has kneepads instructed inside on the knees’ called ”KNEEMAHPANTS”
I’m proud that I actually invented a product that will be very helpful to the dance community and you can be stylist at the same time!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My qualities are staying positive, being humble and having great big energy every time you see me has definitely been my key!
