Meet Natalie Dorsey of Gluten Free Cutie in Downtown Roswell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Dorsey.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Natalie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We are a family owned business dedicated to the Gluten Free & Allergen Aware community. Over 6 years ago my husband and I decided to open up a Gluten Free & Allergen Friendly Bakery and we named it after our daughter Savanna. Our little Gluten Free Cutie.

Savanna, my daughter, is the inspiration to the start of this business. My daughter has allergies to gluten, dairy, and artificial dyes. As an infant my daughter had horrible stomach aches, erratic behavior, and developmental delays. She had many developmental delays, communication and sensory problems. After tons of research and talking with a family member who has a child with autism, we decided to take her off gluten and dairy. After 2 weeks of withdrawals and cleaning her system from the toxins, we started to see a calmer child. After many months from being off dairy and gluten she was able put together 3 word phrases “I love you” for the first time, she was calmer, the obsessive crying began to ease, sleeping better through the night, and sensory problems began to fade.

I created Gluten Free Cutie Bakery especially for children with food allergies to have a safe place to come and experience the joys of picking out a special treat. When my daughter tried one of my gluten free cake pops for the first time, it brought tears to my eyes to see her enjoy something that was cute and delicious but also wasn’t going to give her a stomach ache. I was also tired of going to birthday parties with my daughter and not having anything fun for her to eat while everyone else is enjoying their Princess Cake. I know many can relate to this.

With the rise of Autism, Celiac Disease, and Gluten Intolerance there are more and more people out there who don’t get to enjoy the everyday treats. This is why I opened up Gluten Free Cutie so people with food allergies will have a wide variety of desserts to choose from.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We had a great response since opening up almost 6 years ago. There are so many people that have food allergies such as gluten, peanut, tree nut and dairy allergies. We also use organic clean ingredients so you don’t have to have food allergies to enjoy our desserts!

Gluten Free Cutie – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in Cupcakes, Cake Pops, and Cakes. We are best known for our cupcakes and cake pops. The Devil Went Down to Ga is one of our most popular cupcakes. We also specialize in Biscuits and Scones. Being a Southern girl I couldn’t live without Biscuits. Our baked goods have a Southern Flare to them. We offer lunch during the week with our delicious Fried Green Tomato Biscuit along with Mac n Cheese and other specialty items you can’t get anywhere else. We also serve Breakfast on Saturdays. Since moving to our new location we also offer Tea Parties and Parties in our beautiful Farmhouse Dining Room or our Back Porch.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Getting to see the joy in people’s eyes when they walk in and see a large selection of desserts and other baked good that they have not been able to have due to their food allergies; especially children who have not even had a birthday cake or cupcake. We provide them with such a happy experience!
