Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Jackson.
Natalie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
If you had told me years ago, when I first picked up a camera, if I would be a photographer, I would have laughed and thought you were crazy. I have always been drawn to the creative, crafty and DIY but never considered myself an artist. Even, when I began to build this business and then found myself working a full time day job in a windowless cubicle and running a business during breaks, on nights and weekends, working all the time, I still didn’t think that I was worthy of the photographer title. It wasn’t until I made the leap into full time photography, mostly because I couldn’t handle working both jobs any more and I chose passion over spreadsheets, that I began to dive deeper into what it meant to be an artist and name photography my profession. Through the process of going full time, I discovered that it wasn’t really photography itself that captivated me, but the art of movement and light, how the two play together and make images that speak, that is what drew me in. Today, I find myself working harder than ever to continue to discover more about my love for capturing motion, whether that is the physical motion of an object or person in an image or the motion of something greater… our lives moving forward into new chapters as we fall in love and create new life.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Part of me wants to tell you it’s been easy because that is always how it appears on the outside, through the social media posts and all. However, the road has been full of hard decisions that isolated me from family and friends as I sacrificed relationships in order to build the business on the side while still working full time and raising a family. That is so very often the entrepreneur conundrum and it’s rarely talked about but I learned over time how lucky am I that I get the opportunity to return to the people and relationships that matter time and again. I discovered that by the grace of being self-employed, I am in control of my own balance but that balance is never completely so. There is always one thing, no matter how hard we try, that weighs a little bit more in that season than others. The important thing is that you fight for balance in those areas, stay calm in the seasons where you can’t and return back to your core values and people at every opportunity. The struggle continues, but I don’t consider it as daunting as it was before, it is instead, something worth fighting for!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Four Corners Photography – what should we know?
I am a photographer of wedding, baby and family stories. I specialize in making my clients feel comfortable and beautiful. I capture timeless, creative imagery to remember those different seasons of life as they get married, start a family, and figure out life together as that family grows.
As a company, I am most proud of my dedication to serving my clients well. I believe strongly in providing not only beautiful images, but an experience that makes clients feel comfortable enough not only to be themselves but to love themselves and show them that the life they are making is worth remembering.
I am set apart from others because I genuinely want my clients to feel like they are a part of the Four Corners Photography family and that they can ask me anything. I strive to impress on all of my clients that I truly love them and their stories, it is an honor and a privilege to be invited into their lives, and that I am their resource for all of their questions. Each of my different clients get lots of PDF, printed materials, and blog posts full of information on photography session/ wedding day prep. Most of my clients come to me without having much more than a selfie in their photo history, so I try to help clients understand that this is normal, we are all awkward in front of the camera, and just embrace that awkwardness and focus on living into it. I promise you, that awkwardness is not negative, it is you!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Growing up, you could find me:
– at the library trying to read books that I didn’t understand but I pretended to anyways.
– thumbing through old records and singing harmonies with my favorites: Joni Mitchell, Cary Simon and Johnny Cash.
– trying to DIY my way through life before there was Pinterest and it was up to your own imagination how to make things that were on-trend.
– shuffling around my dad’s office filing away papers and things (my dad is self-employed and he showed us all the ropes early).
– running around barefoot through our summer garden and later writing poetry about the sounds and sights of our home in south Georgia.
