Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Robinson.
Nicholas, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey to becoming a director has been a windy one. I was born and raised in Fredericksburg, VA. All my life, I told stories, but when you’re middle-class art isn’t a route parents want you to pursue, so I studied and pursued engineering. At the end of my high-school career, I had a choice to make that every age man can make: military or college. I always wanted to be different, so I chose both, I graduated from Marion Military Institute in the year 2018 and while there, I wrote over 27 scripts. I decided then that I would pursue storytelling before finishing my military route. I moved from Marion, Alabama to Atlanta, Georgia in the fall of 2018 with no knowledge of film or a plan of any sort. I dived into background work and independent film making, over the past two years I’ve been apart of written or produced over 40 independent films. I offer taping services with coaching, script editing, various film making, scoring, and other various services. I also love to help mentor and teach new filmmakers trying to find their way in Atlanta.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was most definitely has not been a smooth road, for a couple of months, I was homeless and couch surfing in dorm rooms with my friend. I struggled with adjusting from a military life were being quiet and working hard is rewarded vs. the film industry where it is about networking and who you know, I’m naturally introverted so developing networking skills were especially challenging. Still, the hardest thing to battle was depression and mental health. The biggest fight someone in the creative industry will have is not being down on themselves when you’re not moving and not comparing yourself to others. You will see others moving past you. You will see others succeed through connections alone. You will see others succeed when you haven’t seen their work ethic (an important word there being “seen”). The best advice I can give is to focus on yourself and only have a love for your fellow artists and creatives.
Please tell us about your work.
I’m a director, writer and independent filmmaker. People come to me when they want to see their projects come to life, whether that be a creative narrative, wedding, music videos, dance videos, and workout. There’s no project that my team and I won’t take on. I also offer taping and headshot services. Currently, I’m offering free headshots! I offer 30-minute coaching sessions along with the taping service, although character work must be completed beforehand, if you don’t know what that is, I will happily teach you! If you’re a first-time new actor/writer/director, then I will happily help you prepare no charge! My main goal is to help new creatives get their feet wet in Atlanta’s climate. I will advise anyone who reaches out to me.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The first person I have to thank is my loving girlfriend, Noelle Cameron, who inspired me to pursue my dream and move to Atlanta. I have to congratulate Alec Deandrade and his family for letting me live with them when I first moved down. I have to thank Ja’ness Tate for giving me my first directing role on and an indie film called Fangirl and introducing me to my cameraman, who goes by the name of Lord Talent. Finally, all my other close friends who kept cheering me along, such as Brandon, Jacob, Steph, Johnny, and many more, I wish I could shout them all out.
