Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole M. Williams.
Nicole, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
From a little island in the Caribbean, I migrated to the US, graduated college, blazed through several job descriptions, birthed two babies, followed my passion and dived into using my voice to create impact. What I know best is reinventing myself to meet my goals and objectives. I learned the hard way that if you don’t know your value, you will die in the pursuit of success. I also learned the best lessons at the lowest points of my life. When I migrated to NYC, it was like attending graduate school. I matriculated through and my passions morphed into a business. My experiences taught me that there are many ways to live your dream and many ways succeed.
After a few notable opportunities and successes, I thought I knew everything there was to know about knowing your value. WRONG! It took several struggles and shortcomings for me to figure out what it takes to communicate what I bring to the table effectively. Fed up, I channeled my frustration into a passion for helping others know how to leverage their talent and accelerate opportunities no matter their industry. Enters Nicole Williams Collective, LLC.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like I shared in my book Bet On Yourself: Life Lessons to Cultivate and Create Your Own Success, the process of following my passion and doing what I love has not been all sunshine and rainbows. Two of the biggest struggles I faced were identifying what I bring to the table and overcoming my own self-doubts. The truth is, imposter syndrome is real, but success comes only as a result of belief. You can’t be afraid to think and dream big, because disappointment is part of life and failure is the womb to success. Leymah Gbowee said it best, “you can’t leave footprints that last if you are always walking on tiptoes.” I’ve had several personal setbacks and detours from a failed marriage to financial struggles and embracing my own imperfections. And if I am always striving to be my best, then I assume I’ll have many more. But it’s not what happens to you in life, it’s how you handle it. There is no promise that life will be easy. Each day will be unpredictable. But show me a testimony without a test.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am proud to say my little company is designing lives. Everything I have done has been a natural progression to where I am today. But one of my most fulfilling jobs is being a mom to my two very smart daughters. Parenting is also a crash course in entrepreneurship, where you learn how to problem-solve, leverage resources, and juggle projects and schedules. However, as you build your career, gaining acknowledgment from your peers is always great for your resume. So I must say I’m proud to have received an award for impacting other women around me included a Citation from the New York State Assembly, with more awards on the horizon. I’m also proud to be an Aspire-Canada mentor, and for also being one of the Women’s Media Center SheSource Media Experts, a database of media-experienced women experts.
