Today we’d like to introduce you to Nureen Bhimani.
Nureen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always practiced art, especially in drawing and painting, as far as I can remember. Before it was just a hobby and a way of bringing my imagination to life however when it came time to choose a career path, I knew that it had to be related to art. I had to also think practically so I decided to dabble in some graphic design while pursuing fine arts. I enjoyed the idea of creating commercial products and visual graphics digitally so I earned experience in the graphic design field however my heart was always in fine arts thus that became my major that I specialized in. After earning my BFA in Drawing and Painting, I continued working as a graphic design along with exhibiting my paintings to art calls at least once a year. I am a graphic designer by day and a fine artist by night.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely was not a smooth journey to get to where I am today. Choosing the life of an artist is looked at with less value and being from a South Asian background, it isn’t really the most ideal career path when compared to the medical or law field. I did not reject my recommendations of pursuing something that would give me a good income, however, I did know myself and what I wanted. I knew that if I did not like to do something, then it wouldn’t be quality work and I wouldn’t be happy. I like to live a joyful life so I do what I like but I make it so that it is also practical. So, I worked extra hard to prove that I can make it as an artist, and I am still working on it, but at least now I am being supported in my endeavors to achieve success as an artist.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am most proud of the fact that I can create traditional media as well as digital graphics. I specialize specifically in ink paintings that I create to be featured in exhibitions. I do not have a shop yet but that is in the works. I am known for my raven paintings on paper. My painting process is also slightly unconventional in a sense that I sometimes abandon regular tools such as the brush and use twigs instead. Most of my raven paintings are painting with twigs dipped in India Ink. I think that is something that sets me apart. I am currently dabbling in gold and silver leaf to add to my paintings so I am pretty excited about it.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think the industry will more so evolve because change is happening consistently. Since we are in the digital age, I have noticed how traditional media is somehow being infused with digital media on some platforms. Whether it be in the fashion industry or in the gaming industry or even in a craft industry, unique innovations are constantly surfacing with the influx of new knowledge and skills brought by the upcoming generation.
