Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Butler.
Rachel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started being interested in psychology when I took an AP Psychology course in high school. I loved how we learned about personalities and what makes people tick. I have always been the listening ear in my friend group and enjoyed helping people work through their problems. After high school, I pursued my Bachelor’s in Psychology at Kennesaw State University.
While in school at KSU, I held leadership positions and was active in my sorority which helped me gain networking and communication skills. After completing my undergraduate degree, I moved to Eureka, Montana, a very small town, to work at a therapeutic boarding school for troubled teens. There I realized my love for working with teens, their angst, and helping to make their big problems a bit more manageable. I moved back to Georgia and was accepted into the University of North Georgia to pursue my Master of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
Throughout the three-year program, I gained experience at a community mental health agency, volunteering for Crisis Text Line and completing a year-long internship with Johns Creek and Alpharetta Counseling. Along the way, I’ve attended various trainings to help individuals through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and mindfulness. I also am a certified Prepare-Enrich Facilitator for both individual couples and groups. This personalized assessment and interactive technique helps couples increase relationship satisfaction and confidence. Helping couples set a good foundation for their marriage is so rewarding.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not always been a smooth road to getting to where I am. I had concerns about moving to Montana away from family to gain experience. I struggled with feeling inadequate in my master’s program as I learned new skills to best help others. However, without some struggle and worry, there would not be motivation and self-awareness to pursue my dreams.
Rachel Butler Counseling – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I started Rachel Butler Counseling, LLC to promote myself to the clients I want to work with: teens, adult individuals, and premarital and long-term couples.
I have worked with a wide range of individuals from age 3 to 65. I have also worked with individuals with issues such as schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, addiction, suicidal ideation, all types of abuse, trauma, self-harm, relationship troubles, and more.
I am proud to say I have been hired on to two private practices in the metro Atlanta area: Johns Creek and Alpharetta Counseling and HealATL. What sets me apart from other therapists is my work ethic to learn all I can about the issue a client is struggling with and to truly help them the best that I can.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success by setting goals for yourself and reaching them. Success doesn’t always have to be in your professional life, it can include your mental health, friendships, partners, and even the relationship with yourself.
Each person may want success in different parts of their lives. In my professional life, I plan to have a private practice of my own in five years. Therefore, I’ll set smaller goals along the way to make that happen.
