Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Newman.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My passion for the visual and design world has led me in many different directions. Originally, a studio art major, I switched my focus and studied graphic design at James Madison University. Having both a graphic design and studio art background has allowed me to develop a strong eye for problem-solving and storytelling for clients such as the Center for Global Enterprise in New York City, TVS Design in Atlanta, and more. In April of 2018, I bought my first camera and have since added another dimension to the work that I produce and the stories I tell.
I received a phone call two weeks before graduation with the opportunity to move from the DC area to ATL for a three-month contract. I graduated May 5 and without knowing anyone in Atlanta, I moved May 15. The creative opportunities here have been great and so I have stayed.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a photographer, graphic designer, and visual artist. I tell stories through imagery and visual design. Yayoi Kusama described my process the best… “in front of paint brushed and canvas, my hands react to them and make my work before I think of anything. Then, when the piece is completed, I look at it and am surprised by the result—always.” This process is similar to mine in all the creative work I do, whether it be painting, photography or graphic design.
Amy Karr once asked in a podcast, “Are you giving energy or are you taking it?” I take pride in not only my work but in my zeal and curiosity in my own work. I hope that it encourages and invites people to collaborate and push their work further.
I love being able to tell other people’s stories and communicate with the audience in a unique way. Whenever someone is able to connect or feel strongly because of my work, I know I’ve done a good job. My hope is that my audience is interested in my point of view and perspective and that it inspires them to share their own.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Work. Be ready to hustle. I work three jobs now, one full time, and two part-time.
