Today we’d like to introduce you to RayQuan Johnson.
RayQuan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Comedy was something that hit me at a young age. I was class clown throughout my junior college years but never thought it would lead to stand up. My last year in Highschool I cam across “Improv Class” and thats where I discovered I could take it a little further. Around 2010-2011 and when I decided I wanted to give stand up comedy a shot. Growing up, I transitioned from a household to the city from the county making it a hard transition moving away from my parents. The only way I knew how to make friends was entertaining or making someone laugh. During my college years, I decided to venture with Open Mics and Hosting events in my hometown Richmond, VA. It was around October 2014 when I decided to take it a step further and venture to Atlanta, GA to see if its something I really wanted to pursue. Since then I have been apart of two improv troops, performed at a various amount of comedy clubs and have been hosted a few events in the city.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far, it has been a smooth transition and it has showed me if this is something you really want to do and you work hard at it and become more consistent you can make it happen. In the beginning, it was a little rocky I was definitely homesick, but the more I got out and networked, it all started to come together.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Today Stand Up is something that will definitely become full tine for me in the future. I host parties, open mics, events, and talent showcases.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory of my childhood is time spent with my mom. She is 99 percent the reason I do and the reason I am who I am today. I lost her in 1996 when I was seven due to breast cancer. She always had a smile on her face, and I do too because I know she wouldn’t want me being unhappy for the rest of my life because she’s not here with me.
