Meet Richard Simms of Tyrannosaurus Tech in Virginia-Highland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Simms.

Richard, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Carlos Gonzalez and I started Tyrannosaurus Tech close to four years ago. The company was born out of our disappointment in seeing so many cool new tech products fail, specifically those coming out of our hometown of Atlanta. Whether they were launched by startups or more established companies looking to innovate, some of what we saw as the key ingredients for success were often missing. That’s where we saw an opportunity to create value and leverage our extensive backgrounds in tech and startups.

Although a great product (design, engineering, etc.) is important, true success in tech is about so much more. Our team understands this reality and has a unique blend of technical and business expertise that allows Tyrannosaurus Tech to serve as a true strategic technology partner for our clients.

Tyrannosaurus Tech is not just focused on designing and building our clients something amazing but also on how to get that product into the hands of paying customers (and keep it there).

In other words, we act as a technology partner for companies looking to launch new and innovative web and mobile applications. That means not only do we work with our clients to design and develop a great product, but we lend valuable expertise on various topics that are crucial to the product’s long term success, such as SaaS pricing models and strategies for scaling our clients’ technology and staff as product adoption grows. These days, most of our work is in healthcare, public health, or education space. We’re lucky to have clients we’ve worked with for years, in some cases on multiple products.

Has it been a smooth road?
Of course not! It never is. We’re lucky to have grown significantly year over year and are in great shape almost four years into the journey, but there have been struggles and rocky roads along the way.

The biggest challenges so far were in our first year or two in business. Mostly those centered around finding and effectively closing new business, particularly proving we had credibility as a fairly young company and team. Similarly, building up the team was a challenge early on when good engineers have so many interesting and high-paying tech companies to choose from these days.

More recently, we’ve certainly experienced growing pains associated with scaling a services company. The good news is that it is teaching us to hire quality people, delegate, and put systems in place.

Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
Tyrannosaurus Tech acts as a technology partner for companies looking to launch new and innovative SaaS products.

Specialization: We specialize in helping companies bring new technology products to market, most often in the healthcare, public health, or education industries. Typically, we’re working on designing and developing web or mobile applications with our clients as well as helping them define and execute a go-to-market and growth strategy.

What Sets Us Apart: Our team provides both strategic expertise and the technical skills needed to bring new SaaS products to market successfully. That means not only do we work with you to design and develop a great product, but we lend valuable expertise on various topics that are crucial to your product’s long term success.

What We’re Most Proud Of: Over the years, we’ve been able to work with some amazing clients that do great work. We’re most proud of the work we’ve done for local organizations such as The Ron Clark Academy, The Task Force for Global Health, and Active Food Safety.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Yes, as always, a lot is changing in technology these days. We try to strike the right balance between utilizing cutting edge technologies but also ensuring we’re using stable, established, and well supported tools for our clients.

Of course, one of the biggest changes these days is the increasing influence and capabilities of AI and ML (artificial intelligence and machine learning). Our team is investing significant energy on this front as we believe AI and ML will play an increasing role in web and mobile applications we build in the future.

We’re also continuing to trend more towards “serverless” architecture when building applications, which allows us to build amazing products faster and for less money on behalf of our clients.

The “no code” or “low code” movement is also something we’re excited about, particularly for our clients that are looking to launch early-stage MVPs (minimum viable products). These platforms allow us to get something live quicker and for a lower cost, which is great for testing a new concept or validating an idea. Tech is becoming increasingly accessible, so it is an exciting time for anyone looking to innovate or launch new products.
