Meet Robin Davis of The Third Eye Photographic Adventures and Workshops

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Davis.

Robin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
More and more, photography is becoming important for everyone. When I first started teaching creative photo techniques to my students in Cortona, Italy I quickly learned what a special and personal form of self expression photography can be and also how differently and uniquely each photographer sees their world. When my students began to engage more, letting their personalities shine through their work, expressing what they loved, hoped and felt… that is when they started to make meaningful images. Using techniques and processes I’ve pioneered for my own work has allowed me to help each of my photography students to create in this deeper way, and find more understanding not just in the world around them but also within themselves.

Regional and international workshop travel trips feature visits to special places, carefully chosen to meet three important criteria… a uniquely beautiful location, a story of mysterious history and legend and most importantly, a permeable energy that inspires our photography.

About once a month, my photography talks are held in and around the Metro Atlanta area and are explorations into the unexpected. We discuss new ways to think about and use our photography, including iPhoneography, ways to print your photography on tile, metal or fabric, and tips for eye-riveting attention getting images that you can have fun creating, from social media, to fine art.

I love to work with all levels of photographers, from new beginners, amateur enthusiasts and professionals too. There is a hidden spark in everyone’s way of seeing and I often bring out new directions and ways of self expression that my students may not have realized or considered before.

The photographic community is a big part of Atlanta’s creative makeup. My weekend workshops at some amazing locations in and around our beautiful city are great ways to get outside with your camera in the spring.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As the times and technologies have changed over the years, the desire for us to make beautiful images has stayed the same. A smooth transition from film cameras, to digital and incredibly, our cell phone cameras, has evolved and are all great tools to practice artistic composition. My workshops and lectures cover the details on what makes photographs pleasing to the eye and engaging to the viewer.

Taking time to meet together and learning from and inspiring each other has been the key to our successes. The hard work has been challenging but fun and it has been the experimenting and blending of old and new photographic processes and printing techniques that has led to the most creative productions. My students are having exhibitions of their work and creating beautiful online galleries and websites to show off their accomplishments. I am fortunate to have so many student friends returning to my workshops year after year.

The Third Eye Photographic Adventures and Workshops – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My personal photography has led me on a great journey, working in Italy and France, as well as Atlanta and Coastal Georgia in the US. My images have been created for both fine art and publishing and often feature accurately costumed models set in other time periods. This is one of my all-time favorite things to do and I love sharing this unique subject matter with my Photography Workshop students, in addition to the beautiful villages and landscapes we also photograph together. We approach each subject and shoot as a true assignment with set goals and our resulting photographs are stunning. Looking at these images, it sometimes seems as if we have gone back in time!

I want to let everyone know that photography is not just a technique or form of documentation. You can start with an idea and create your own reality!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I know how happy I am when I get a great new photography assignment, win a photo prize, sell a print or am invited to be in an art exhibition. However, my truly proudest moments are when I see this happening for my photography students! It is a deep joy for me to share in their first successes and to see their photographic lives continue to bloom!

I periodically offer classes on how to promote your work, enter competitions, write your artist’s statement and photo bio. When you are pre-prepared in this way, it is easy to begin showing your work. Another popular workshop I do each summer, takes you through the step-by-step process of building a beautiful website to showcase your very best work.
