Today we’d like to introduce you to Runna Jay.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve never seen myself doing what I’m doing now. In my early childhood, I grew up wanting to design video games and later on become a professional wrestler at some point. That all changed around the summer of 2012, where I’ve got heavily inspired, wrote down all my goals and everything from then starting manifesting. I began to take the art of music production seriously around late 2014 to early 2015 and started to get artists on my tracks through the relationships my family had. My family has a lot of talented musicians and people who’ve had experience in the industry, from my father managing the legendary DMX along with the Ruff Ryders, my cousin being signed to Fat Joe’s Terror Squad, and my uncle being the president of an independent record label. They all vouched for me, not because they were related to me, but they believed in me ever since I’ve started making beats that I’m going to be one of the greatest producers on the face of this earth.
With my uncle being the president of the indie label, I was able to learn so much in and outs about the business like how to mix your records (Big shoutout to Seth Firkins RIP) or how to reach out to other creatives in the right way and especially networking. Networking is a big factor, and its how I’ve got most of my placements as of right now like how I’ve got my music on film and television. Today I’m working on a lot of bigger projects for the future to come and continuing to establish my brand as a record producer venturing into different genres and venues within the industry like ghostwriting, producing movies, and eventually starting my own solidified creative team.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, this is not been a smooth road. Anything that’s worth it in life does not come easy by any means. During my journey, that I’m still going through right now, I’ve had to lose a lot of friends that I once had. Lost a lot of family members that were mentally close to me at one point. I had to change my whole circle I had to unlearn, elevate my mind and take sacrifices because I wanted this talent and I’m working everyday at it. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned so far about business and especially in life is that “No one should look outwardly for someone to come save them from their situation, they have to look inwardly to come save themselves”. That simple statement show me a lot of things especially when it comes to getting people to believe in your work you have to believe in yourself no matter what and the rest will follow through. I mean, don’t get me wrong I’m not perfect by any means.
My production wasn’t the best at one point. I didn’t know how to format a song at one point. I’ve got put into situations I wasn’t ready for and all that gave me was is experience and knowledge on what I would have to do if situations arise. To all the readers that eventually may read this article, I encourage you guys to really don’t stop whatever you’re doing and keep on going because whatever you do consistently increases weather it’s thinking positively or working towards a goal you can achieve it.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
What I do is record production. Record production is more than just making a beat and sending it off to someone via email. It’s actually the makings of the song in its entirety. Sometimes I may write a whole song and make the instrumental for an artist or just the instrumental and let the artist come up with the rest. It all varies. I’m really giving the alley-oop to them. I’m proud of my capabilities that I’m blessed to do both write and make compositions. What separates me from the millions of producers out here is that when hear my creations you can tell that I love what I do and my heart is in it. Most people either do it for the money or fame that comes with it. You gotta love eat, breathe, and sleep this. Just like how Kobe loved basketball you gotta love whatever you choose to do and give it you’re all.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t regret anything or any lessons that I’ve learned in my current journey, good or bad because I’ve learned from them in so many ways. I look at life like there’s always time and room for improvement. My two biggest lessons that I’ve learned so far is that is that one, it’s about who knows you, and two, not everyone you come across is your friend. Most people stick to what they are familiar with rather than trying something new, so when it comes to getting recognized, put yourself out there and make yourself known! You have to stay motivated and grounded as well throughout life’s journeys because they will be naysayers and those who will throw you off course as they see you progressing so keep doing what you do.
