Meet Sarah English

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah English.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
This life offers us an overwhelming amount of opportunity; what we do with that opportunity makes us unique. Early on, I knew that my heart was set on pursuing the artistic opportunity. My journey took off both physically and spiritually when I decided to use my opportunities to seek the good in the world. To me, “good” means selflessness, honesty, hope, kindness, honor, and humility. I fell in love with film photography early on in high school and became enamored with what a camera was capable of. Yes, it allowed me to capture a moment in time, but it also ignited a passion in me to capture the people all around me.

As I’ve grown, I’ve molded this concept of good into my art by using digital photography as my creative outlet, my way of serving others, and as a mean to appreciate the life I’ve been given. Broadly speaking, I hope that my artistic journey captures the beauty of those I photograph and gives others a sense of overwhelming love for who they are and the life they live. Everyone has stories and moments to be documented; I’m honored to use my creative ability be a part of that process.

Please tell us about your art.
There are two passions that motivate me to live this life differently. Glorifying God and serving others. My mission is to use my creative abilities to be a light to anyone I encounter. Humble Hands specializes in natural light portrait, wedding, and lifestyle photography. There is beauty in the natural. I want to work with clients who are seeking to capture life as it is: authentic. No, I will not photoshop you to be skinnier or take out wrinkles, because you are beautifully made, and I’m here to showcase that beauty. As is. Investing in Humble Hands Artistry is more than acquiring photos. It’s acquiring a relationship and an experience. I am continuously amazed at the opportunities that have come from my journey as a photographer and am excited to meet more people, take more photos, and do more life. Let’s chase the light.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Being a successful artist can look different on each individual. When an artist reaches the point of knowing what they want to convey, I believe this is the first sign of success. When we know the answer to “why are we creating in the first place?” we then can become the artist we are called to be. I personally find, passion, direction, and motivation when making my art. I know I have succeeded when my thoughts, knowledge, and understandings have been expanded. This is how I measure my personal success. I measure my artistic success when I know my art can expand the audiences thoughts, knowledge, and understandings.

It is important to understand that artists can easily fall into the comparison trap. When an artist becomes fixated on comparing their success with another’s, it is simply not an accurate measurement. I believe each artist is unique in their talents. Not one person can make the same brush stroke as the other, and that is important when considering the success of an artist. Success comes not when you are better than your neighbor, or your paintings are selling for a higher dollar amount. It is when you realize your potential, and you utilize it every day.
