Meet Sarah & Jonathan Seyfred of S&J’sWoodFired Pizza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah & Jonathan Seyfred.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah & Jonathan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Jonathan and I started S&J’s Woodfired Pizza because we wanted to do something together that would bring happiness and healthy food to our community. At the time we were both working as Emergency Room Nurses and we saw this business as an opportunity to grow our love for each other, local food, and connect with others in our community in a positive way. Jonathan had always been the main cook in our family, whipping up homemade breads and sauces, and I had great fun memories of working at a pizza joint in high school and college. Starting S&J’s was a leap toward simplifying our lives and becoming more self-sustaining while challenging ourselves to learn the ropes of starting a business from scratch. Now, after 6 years in business, we employ 3 full time staff members as well as 2-3 part-time folks. We cater for private events such as weddings, bar-mitzvahs, birthday parties, movie sets, and everything in between. We can be found at several local farmer’s markets on a regular schedule from April-December. Jonathan makes our dough from scratch once a week and oversees all aspects of the business operation, and I now stay home with our 3 (soon to be 4!) kids but love to hop in and make pizza whenever I get the chance!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Honestly most of the road has been pretty smooth. I’d say our biggest struggles have been the initial learning curve (we invested in equipment we didn’t need, took on events that really never showed potential to be profitable, etc.) and the seasonality of the business. Thankfully this off-season has been our busiest yet so we have been able to keep the wheels turning throughout the winter! We never take our success for granted and strive to always look for opportunities to improve and enhance our offerings and provide opportunities for our staff to succeed and feel valued.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with S&J’sWoodFired Pizza – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a mobile wood-fired pizza catering company. We make hand-tossed pizza dough topped with local and seasonal ingredients. We are known for our unique pizza combinations. Our peach pizza is a summer favorite- (peaches, bacon, jalapeños), and our apple is a hit in the fall (apples, bacon, goat feta, and homemade pesto) What sets us apart from others is that we make nearly everything from scratch or source it locally and cook it all on-site with a live fire. The pizzas cook in about 90 seconds so we can take fresh, hot, food anywhere. We are really proud that we have never compromised our food quality. We make every dough-ball from scratch and hand-roll it, every meatball, each pasta dish, etc. is made by hand and with the highest-quality, locally-sourced ingredients.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We try to enhance our menu each season to include an even broader list of salads, appetizers, pastas, and other munchies. We have recently expanded our services to include and in-home personal pizza chef offering where we make our same awesome pizzas in your home oven for smaller parties. This is a great alternative to having the wood-fired oven on site. Additionally, we are looking to expand our catering services to include a “premium package” where we will bus tables, refill drinks, help set-up and/or clean-up from the event, thus providing an overall enhancement to create a luxury experience for our guests.
