Meet Sarah Lisle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Lisle.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been interested in photography since high school, and I began taking photos in college, but it wasn’t until I became a mother that I found real purpose in my work. I realized that pictures would be one of the only ways I’d remember those special and fleeting details of my daughter’s life. I developed this urgent need to capture her perfect little… everything!

Around the same time, I also wanted to find a way to do something bigger than myself. My husband suggested I pick up photography again, and after photographing a few family friends it clicked. I fell in love experimenting with all the different ways love and joy could be shown between different family members; every person brings their own unique and beautiful perspective and I love learning from each family that I work with. That feeling whenever I deliver images to my clients, knowing that they now have another collection of images that tells their own unique story, is why I’ve loved doing this for six years.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is it ever a smooth road? I don’t think challenges can be avoided. I find the challenges just change as I navigate new territory.

When I first began taking pictures in college, it was the usual self-doubt and imposter syndrome. After, it was figuring out what I wanted to create and to be for both my business and my work. For example, I love celebrating weddings, but I don’t feel the same excitement when photographing them. It was hard to “put myself in a corner” but since limiting my scope to only photographing what keeps me inspired, I’ve seen so much growth in my work. Currently, it’s learning how to rebuild my clientele as we relocate with the military.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a lifestyle family photographer, which basically means that I photograph families in a variety of locations (their homes, the park down the street, cute coffee shops downtown, etc.) using natural light. If you want an idea of what that actually looks like, I joke that you should just picture a fun family play date… with a stalker following you with a camera. That’s what I do.

Before I had children of my own I worked as an elementary school teacher so I know kids. I know how to capture their attention, I know how to calm them down, I know how to help them feel safe to be themselves. When I drive out to a photo shoot, my number one purpose is to facilitate situations and moments that let each family member show genuine emotion with their family. I feel like that is one area that sets me apart from other family photographers: my work isn’t too stiff or posed – I just allow the clients to be themselves.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I walked home from school every day with my three siblings – rain or shine. What was a 10-minute walk sometimes took an hour because I loved looking at all the beautiful leaves and taking in all the smells and colors around me. I still love going on walks with my family and seeing what new things I can spot on a familiar route that I hadn’t seen before.
