Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Powell.
Sarah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been in the beauty industry for six years. I received my esthetics licenses right out of high school because I always knew this was the industry I wanted to be in. My love for the beauty world came when I was pretty young and did competitive dance. All the stage makeup and different looks we had to do amazed me. Throughout high school, I would do my friends’ hair, makeup, nails, etc…. and my senior year of high school I did an enrollment for cosmetology that partnered with my high school.
During my esthetics program, I interned at a salon called Authentic Beauty and was there for five years. I was able to expand and grow my business, as well as learn new things to market my trade. My boss, Alyson Hoag, was able to guide me in the right steps to get to where I am today. In 2018 I was awarded “Best Brows of Atlanta” by Best Self Magazine. I am extremely grateful for that opportunity.
Come 2020, I had a goal I wanted to meet and that was to open a place of my own. It has been a challenge due to the pandemic we are under. I opened up May 11th of this year and was terrified, but it has been the best decision I have made thus far. I have fantastic clients who continue to support me and my business.
Has it been a smooth road?
I had this vision to open my own salon, probably since I was 8. When I started working in the beauty industry, I knew that’s where I’d eventually get too. I started putting plans in place probably three years ago, but back then, I did not have the confidence in myself to go out on my own. Over those three years, I have had family and friends challenge me to challenge myself to build up my confidence. I have met fantastic people along the way that have now become a huge part of my life that have truly helped make this transition smoother.
I definitely can say opening up this year was super scary and it wasn’t smooth at all, but I knew if I didn’t do it, I never would. I was originally supposed to open my doors before the pandemic came along, but that put me back a lot. I went back and forth with myself if this was really the right time to do this, but honestly, is there ever a right time?
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Beauty and Brows by Sarah story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is named “Beauty and Brows by Sarah”. I specialize in eyebrows, lashes, and spray tans. I also do waxing and makeup as well. I can say I am more known for my brow work and was named “Best Brows of Atlanta” in 2018, as well as the salon I was working at was named “best Brows of Atlanta” in 2019.
I am most proud of my business due to the fact I am 24 and I have a 6-year-old little girl who really gave me the motivation to make this all happen. I did it for us. My family means everything to me so to be able to now have the time to spend with them is my top priority. I set my own hours and when I’m not at work, I am spending time with my daughter and family.
What sets me apart from some of the beauty world is rather than waxing or threading brows, I tweeze. It’s more precise and is better for your skin. Also, if you have made a mistake and your brows have now become too thin, tweezing is the best route to go for getting them grown back in!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the next 5-10 years, I would love to be in a bigger space and offering more services. Having more of a full-service salon is very ideal for me, that way it can be a one-stop-shop! I’d love to create my own product line to provide my clients with the best hair and skin products.
