Today we’d like to introduce you to Savanna Brown.
Hi Savanna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself and sharing how you got started in your particular industry.
My story seems so unique to me because it feels almost as if photography just fell into my lap (strange, I know!).
In the year 2014, what started as a “Yes!” to helping a friend (curiously taking photos) slowly but surely morphed into a career that I’m incredibly passionate about. From that tiny seed, I’ve been able to build a business that I’m incredibly proud of — one that’s introduced me to some of the most genuine people, given me the ability to see more of the world, and even allowed me to be published in places I would have never dreamt possible.
I know… there’s a lot of gaps and question marks between 2014 and 2022. But just be aware, I haven’t gotten to where I am today without a beautiful community of friends + family, generous mentors, wonderful clients, and the many mistakes I’ve made along the way (esp. since transitioning my lil passion to a full-time career in the fall of ’18).
Which brings me to today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Mistakes and failures are a part of any and every story. And without them, we would be robbed of the gift of perseverance. The tenacity it takes to hold tight to a vision is one that doesn’t come cheap. But it is always worth it… in all areas of life.
Specifically, it has been hard for me to maintain a healthy work/life balance in certain seasons of my career. But the longer I move forward in this job, the more I realize that I MUST prioritize my own life in order to give my clients all that they deserve. Simply put, you can’t pour from an empty cup!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So if you haven’t caught on yet… yes, I am a photographer! I always say that I specialize in life, love, and humanitarian photography. For me, that means that my weekends are full of weddings while my weeks are spent working with some special non-profits sharing their various “life and more” stories.
I’d like to think that something that sets me apart from other creatives in my field is the integration of my personal self/life into my business. You’re gonna get the same “Sav” photographing your wedding that you would get on a random game night with friends. Instead of hiding the parts of me that a typical 9-5 would find taboo, I fling the door wide open and invite others in… i.e., my faith, family, hobbies, etc. I don’t know about you, but when it comes to hiring someone to document a special moment in my life, I want a friend to do so. Hence, allowing myself and business to translate as approachable, inviting, and friend-fostering is the goal.
Lastly, something I’m truly proud (and honored) to share is that in 2021, my work was nationally published in three different editions of Magnolia Journal — a magazine that I’ve loved for a long time. I still get giddy when I think about it!
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
In middle school, I was affectionately known as “Savanna Montana.” And yes, it was because I was a huge Hannah Montana fanatic (it was tasteful, ok!!). Every Friday in my math class, my teacher would end class and invite me up to the front to “perform” a Hannah Montana song — dance moves and all. It was more of a funny deal than serious, but I remember how much fun we always had on those Fridays! I can’t help but laugh when I think about it.
Hence my middle school superlative was “Most Likely to Become Famous.”
