Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergio Robinson. Him and his team share his story with us below.
Please kick things off for us with some background on the story.
Sergio DV Robinson started designing fashion in 2011 but his love for style came from his creative childhood. By admiring his mother getting ready for work as she paired her vintage Louis Vuitton boots with her mink fur coat, his love for style and fashion was nurtured at a young age. Vogue was his bible and Lady Gaga was his biggest inspiration.
After high school, he studied Fashion and Retail Management at The Art Institute of Atlanta. He immediately made connections and emerged into the fashion industry as a graphic designer. He started working for small brands by designing graphic t-shirts for silk printing then evolved into a seamstress as a dressmaker. Being self-taught, he combined his previous design experience and tailoring skills and birthed the couture house named “SDVR”. SDVR stands for the initials of his name which is: Sergio Diamond Valentino Robinson.
In 2015 he was invited to Manhattan, NYC for the GLAAD Media Awards for his first red carpet client Jenny Boyland who was a co-star for Caitlyn Jenner’s reality show “I Am Cait”. He was introduced to Mariah Carey, Caitlyn Jenner, Lee Daniels, and Diane Sawyer. His career blossomed from being a dressmaker to Celebrity Published Designer by styling Whitney Reign from “The Voice” on the cover of NYSFE Magazine. He has also styled other reality stars such as Queen Just Brittany “Love And Hip Hop Atlanta”, Veronica Vega “Love And Hip Hop Miami”, and more. He has done seven fashion shows, four red carpets, and is published on a double cover NYC magazine.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges along the way?
The grass is never greener on the other side. Through trial and error, Sergio has learned that fashion isn’t all glitz and glamour. It truly takes true sacrifice to be consistent and constantly inspired with a full-time job and adult responsibilities at the same time. There has been a lot of sleepless nights, bloody fingertips from needles, insomnia, and impatience during his career. His first red carpet experience was not a smooth sailing experience. He missed his flight, booked his hotel for the wrong date, and had nothing but 200$ in his wallet when he first visited New York for the first time alone. Meeting Mariah Carey was the highlight of the entire process and taught him a valuable lesson. That lesson was: “Never give up, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Keep going.”
Please tell us about SDVR.
SDVR is a brand that embodies Style, Beauty, and Glamour. It is a mixture of high fashion Avant- Garde elements with runway glamour styling. Sergio specializes in custom evening red carpet gowns for celebrities and public figures. He is known for his sexy design aesthetic with a hint of pop culture references.
Sergio is most proud of the growth of the brand and how he pushes for innovation with every collection he releases. He reinvents styles and creates them with a personal unique twist.
His brand is unique, original, fresh, and also timeless. That is what sets him apart from other fashion brands.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
His favorite memory from childhood would have to be the time he visited Disney World at six years old. Imagination has always been a coping mechanism for him living in a divorced household. Disney World gave him a space where he could dream and imagine the unimaginable.
